The classic tale of the love between Orpheus and Euridice is gloriously retold here under the direction of French conductor Jean-Claude Malgoire. One of the first operas ever written, Monteverdi`s piece from 1607 remains one of the most influential, setting a standard against which all others are compared. Here, the cast is comprised of Baroque opera specialists, including Kobie van Rensburg (tenor), Cyrille Gerstenhaber (soprano), and Philippe Jaroussky (male soprano).

Widely regarded as the greatest living Japanese director as well as one of the film world's foremost hierophants of transgression, Nagisa Oshima returns from a long hiatus with a film worthy of his reputation. Set in 1865 during the waning days of the Tokugawa shogunate, it focuses on an exotic young male beauty, Kano (Ryuhei Matsuda), who has recently been recruited by the strict Shinsengumi samurai militia. He quickly becomes the lover of another recruit, Hyozo Tashiro (Tadanobu Asano), and, although homosexuality is officially verboten, Commander Kondo (Yoichi Sai) seems to have adopted a don't-ask don't-tell policy. He has little choice, since the teenage wraith soon becomes the prime object of desire for half the militia. Jealousy threatens to erode the company's morale as the samurai engage in kendo swordplay for a shard of attention from the impassive Kano. Captain Hijikata (Takeshi Kitano), the most humane and aware of the samurai, struggles to maintain discipline while fighting against his own attraction to the youth. TABOO is a fascinatingly ambiguous exploration of the uncontrollable force of sexuality in a highly repressive military environment. The ravishingly otherworldly art direction by Yoshinobu Nishioka and insistently minimal score by Ryuichi Sakamoto are particularly notable.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.85Single Side - Dual LayerAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1. Birdy (DVD) » Birdy (DVD)

In Alan Parker's adaptation of William Wharton's acclaimed novel, the title character is a Vietnam vet hospitalized for postwar trauma. Lying in a state of amentia, Birdy (Matthew Modine) fantasizes about birds in flight, an obsession that has haunted him since childhood. Now this fascination acts as a barrier to reality and the pain of his years in Vietnam. After doctors' efforts fail to cure him, his childhood friend Al (Nicolas Cage)--also a discharged soldier nursing wounds from the war--is brought in to try to coax Birdy out of his hallucinations.BIRDY, told largely in stark, lyrical flashbacks from Al's point of view, is both a heartrending examination of the psychological consequences of war and an ode to the spiritually rejuvenating powers of friendship and imagination. The two young leads turn in powerful, humane performances. Parker (MIDNIGHT EXPRESS) provides innovative direction, most notably in the film's stunning, controversial ending.DVD Special FeaturesRegion 1 EncodingKeep CaseProduction NotesScene SelectionsInteractive MenusWidescreen AnamorphicTheatrical TrailersTalent Files
