Young Assol lives with her ex-sailor father, Longren, in a reclusive home on the outskirts of a remote Russian fishing village; there they are outcasts, spurned and taunted by the other townsfolk, and the butt of children's jokes. But Assol was issued a prophecy by a wizard as a very young child, which has helped her bear her hardships with valor and courage; he told her that someday a brave sailor would arrive to take her to a faraway land under crimson sails, and she has grown up waiting patiently for the prophecy to come true. Director Alexander Ptushko makes a major contribution to fantastical Russian cinema with his epic tale of cripple-turned-war-hero Ilya Muromets. The first Soviet widescreen film ever produced, ILYA MUROMETS follows Ilya's wild battles against unspeakable evils, which include massive armies and creatures with names like Nightingale the Robber, and Gorynch the Serpent. Released in 1956, the film set a new record with its huge cast, which included an impressive 106,000 extras playing soldiers, and 11,000 horses.

This fifth installment in the saga of Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman tells a touching story of heroism as well as delivering plenty of action. Zatoichi (Shintaro Katsu) and a travelling companion are asked by a dying man to protect a servant girl, Omitsu (Shiho Fujimora). Zatoichi also finds himself bound to the duties of two gangs who have interests in the girl. Zhang Yang, the award-winning director of 1999's SHOWER, recreates the powerful story of Chinese actor Jia Hongsheng in the fascinating and thought-provoking QUITTING. Jia was a modestly successful breakout Chinese star in the late 1980s and early 1990s, appearing in such films as SUMMER EXPECTATIONS and SILVER SNAKE MURDERS as well as the award-winning and controversial FROZEN. In 1992, Jia starred in a stage production of KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN, directed by Zhang, and was introduced to heroin--which he embraced wholeheartedly. The dementia that stemmed from his addiction resulted in a closed-off existence in which there was room only for the Beatles song Let It Be and little else.QUITTING is not a documentary; Zhang brings back all the principals, who play themselves. Thus, when Jia's parents retire early in order to move in with their son (and daughter) to take care of him, the pain and frustration is being relived for the screen scene by scene, making for an uncomfortable yet remarkable and original format in which to watch this family struggle to save a child yet again.
