This Russian-made study of Cuba, partially written by renowned poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko, captures the island just before it made the transition to a post-revolutionary society. Moving from city to country and back again, I AM CUBA examines the various problems caused by political oppression as well as by great discrepancies in wealth and power.Beginning in Havana in the pre-Castro era, we see how foreigners contributed to the city's prostitution and poverty; this sequence features dreamy, hallucinogenic camera work that creates a feeling of unease and dislocation. Then, in glorious images of palm tress and fertile land, the film looks at the sugar cane fields in the countryside, and the difficulties faced by peasants working the land. When a team of Japanese scientists doing a biological study on the country's underground sewage system discover a litter of otherworldly looking eggs, they deliberate about their finding, and then set about destroying them. Italian horror master Dario Argento pays homage to THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which he would remake a decade later, with this film about a hooded killer who torments the opera diva whom he adores. Cristina Marsillach stars as Betty, a young understudy who gets a chance to star in a production of Verdi's Macbeth when the lead breaks her leg. Her performance receives universal acclaim and also attracts the hooded killer who periodically kidnaps Betty, tapes razor blades under her eyes, and forces her to watch him commit murder. Kid Ramos is a young man from the ghetto who's literally fighting to get out of it, on his way to becoming the hottest new Latino boxing star. Cuervo is a small-time criminal on his way up within the racketeering business, working to amass his small fortune by fixing boxing fights. So far he's stayed ahead of the law that's on his tail, but they are slowly closing in on Cuervo, unbeknownst to him. When Cuervo tries to fix one of Kid's fights, Kid refuses to go along with it, so Cuervo has no choice but to beat up his manager, setting off a string of events that bring the authorities ever closer to bringing him down. Edited into a beautifully photographed, moving film, even after five reels were confiscated by Saddam Hussein`s government, this Iraqi/French collaboration is set just before the outbreak of war in 2003. In the southern region of Iraq where the Tigris river runs through marshland, an old man (Sami Kaftan) lives in a tiny hut thatched from reeds. He has a peaceful, simple life. He loves his wife dearly and in his prayers he is thankful for the life that they have shared together, explaining that as time passes and they experience ups and downs together, their love only grows. When the old man`s wife falls sick, he must seek out the medicine to make her better. He paddles his little canoe for two full days to reach Baghdad, then scours every pharmacy in the city to find the prescription. It is harrowing to watch this fatigued character in his quest, braving the busy city and its pollution, crime, and corruption, then passing a lonely night on the steps of a mosque. Meanwhile radio reports echo in the background, hinting at the impending war--that French president Chirac is opposed to the war, as is the Vatican, yet American President Bush has asked congress to approve the funding to go to war. The old man remains sadly focused on his wife and his goal to cure her. He is a good man with a true heart who is both an emblem--and a victim--of the changing times.
