Andy and Tomas have earned a reputation abroad as two of the top young publicists to hail from Argentina. They return to Buenos Aires with bloated egos and open an agency of their own. Their good fortune continues as they win a coveted industry award. The celebrated publicists are now ready to throw their first party. Their guest list is full of important media figures and the wealthy elite, but Andy and Tomas also add some spice to the mix inviting prostitutes, a drug kingpin, and a pair of pickpockets. In May 1948, a group of European Jewish refugees illegally sail to Palestine via the cargo freighter Kedma, arriving only a few days before the departure of British forces and the founding of the nation of Israel. Once ashore they are received by the Palmach, Jewish fighters who help them evade arrest by British troops. Hiding amid the hills, they have a chance to tell their story, and there's even time for some singing. But before they can even change out of their civilian clothes, the weary immigrants are instructed in machine gun use and promptly sent off into combat against a hostile Arab force. Bloody battle and heartrending tragedy ensues, with both sides making mournful predictions for the future of their shared land. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Amos Gitai, KEDMA is an elegiac, beautifully photographed meditation on exile, hope, despair and the trouble-plagued history of the Jewish people. Ignacio Lopez Tarso, a Mexican actor whose lengthy career spanned over 50 years, turned in one of his best performances in this 1964 film. Tarso plays a man crippled by poverty who takes in a fighting rooster that is in even worse shape than he is. The man nurses the rooster back to fighting form and soon has the cockerel back in the ring. The dusty cockfighting circles bring riches to the man as his bird wins duel after duel. With a large prize in sight, the man teams with a powerful gangster and the gangster's mistress, a singer who the poor protagonist falls for. This cockfighting classic is notable for the incredible talent involved in the writing team. In the process, all of film history is summoned as actors and actresses, apparitions and illusions commingle in a fluid spectacle brought to life by Cinema's furtive memory. Marcello Mastroianni heads up the cast of cinematic luminaries as film history is referenced in a labyrinth of cinematic moments, icons, trivia, and highlights.
