Similar to the 2003 Brazilian drama CITY OF GOD, this Argentinean film offers a disquieting portrait of gang life in Argentina. As Buenos Aires sinks deeper into poverty, a pregnant young girl decides she`s had enough of the gang life and attempts to leave the crime-strewn streets behind her. Her fellow gang member and boyfriend also tries to leave, after pulling off one last robbery. But as keen-eyed cinemagoers know,

usually spells doom, and as PIZZA, BEER AND SMOKES careers towards a turbulent conclusion, it seems the gang life isn`t as easy to escape from as some may think.

Shot in striking, diffused color by master cinematographer Sven Nykvist, THE PASSION OF ANNA is one of several Ingmar Bergman films of the 1960s dealing with a limited number of characters in an isolated setting--filming took place on the remote island of Faro, where Bergman was living at the time--whose emotional and psychological imbalances eventually lead to a crisis. Max von Sydow plays Andreas, a loner who (after an initial chance encounter) becomes acquainted with the crippled widow Anna (Liv Ullmann) through their mutual friends Eva and Elis Vergerus (played by Bibi Andersson and Erland Josephson), a troubled married couple. Andreas and Anna embark on a love affair but are soon confronted with disturbing revelations about each other's pasts. Their relationship suffers irreparable damage through mutual deception, insecurities, and violent outbreaks. Meanwhile, the atmosphere of malaise and menace surrounding the characters is heightened by the presence of an unknown perpetrator on the sparsely populated island who has been brutally torturing and killing farm animals. One of the finest examples of intellectual montage, consisting of more than 3,200 shots in its 103 minutes, TEN DAYS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD has been described as a Constructivist poster come to life. Again working from a commission by Lenin, in this case, to make a film commemorating the 10th anniversary of the overthrow of the Kerensky government by the Bolsheviks, Sergei Eisenstein saw it as an opportunity to push his montage experiments to the limit. Focusing on the crucial events from February through October 1917, the director treats Lenin (Vasili Nikandrov) with hagiographical reverence while satirizing the opponents of the Bolsheviks as obese clowns or idiots, using visual metaphors of an extraordinary variety and richness. Kerensky's (Nikolai Popov) strutting narcissism is illustrated by a cut to a mechanical peacock. Shots of officials of the provisional government are intercut with Japanese and African masks, Haitian voodoo idols, and sacred Chinese statuary. Perhaps most memorable is the image of the white horse dangling from the open St. Petersburg drawbridge, a bridge whose raised sections Eisenstein compared to the arms of a dying man, as a massacre unfolds on the ground.
