DAY OF WRATH: Dreyer's horrifying masterpiece based on Hans Wiers Jenssen's play which, in turn, was based on actual records of witch trials during the 1600s. An old woman curses the local clergyman and his family as she is burned at the stake in this sobering and ghastly study of religious fanaticism. ORDET: Based on the play by Kaj Munk, this is the story of a man who is ridiculed for believing he is Christ until his miracles heal two families of different faiths angry at each other over a love affair between their children. A classic contrast of institutional religion vs. a personal interpretation of faith. AKA The Word. GERTRUD: Adapted from Hjalmar Soderberg's 1919 play of the same title, GERTRUD tells the tale of a woman's search for idealized love and spiritual fulfillment, which takes her beyond the confines of a passionless marriage through a series of affairs that tragically fail to live up to her expectations. Employing restrained direction, stark set design, and long, contemplative shots, Dreyer's swan song is a beautiful, meditative and haunting masterwork. Peter Abrahams builds his simple tale slowly and methodically, and there is some sharp humor along the way (one class is titled'Superman and Man: Nietzsche and Cobain'). Readers who are patient will be rewarded. This is a cunning, sinister variation on the old story about the boy who cried wolf, and Abrahams has delivered a rock-solid piece of suspense writing.
