This heart-warmer concerns precocious eight-year-old Valentin (Rodrigo Noya), who lives alone with his grandmother in Buenos Aires in the early 1960s. Longing to be reunited with his absentee mom, Valentin lives with his eccentric grandma (long-time Almodovar star Carmen Maura) and deals with the occasional visits from his reprobate father (director Alejandro Agresti). For solace, Valentin visits a kindly musician (Mex Uritzberea) who urges the boy to hang on to his dream of becoming Argentina's first astronaut. Valentin also develops a bond with Leticia (Juliete Cardinali), one of his dad's young girlfriends. Noya plays his role like a pint-sized blend of Woody Allen, Nanni Moretti, and Audrey Tatou (AMELIE), replete with poignant optimism, wry commentary, and a cupid-like need to play matchmaker for the nicer adults in his life. As engaging as he is, the film gets stolen by the wonderful Cardinali (a TV star in Argentina) who radiates angelic warmth in her too-few scenes. Agresti suffuses the film with well-observed period detail that only hints at the political turmoil of the time (Argentina was in the grip of the infamous reign of terror throughout the'60s and'70s). Roger Vadim takes his patented obsessions with beauty and the tawdry, destructive behavior that inevitably accompanies it to the French literary classic LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES, Choderlos de Laclos's scathing 18th-century epistolary novel. Jeanne Moreau and Gerard Philipe play Valmont and Juliette, two equally beautiful and equally cruel married hipsters scouring the smoky and chic underworld of beatnik-tinged 1960 Paris for their next amorous victims. A highly charged jazz soundtrack (by Thelonious Monk) underscores the decadence as Valmont and Juliette compare and contrast their cruel infidelities, each trying to outdo the other. When Valmont's latest obsession, Marianne (played by Vadim's wife, Annette), begins to capture his heart, the game is up and Juliette seeks revenge, bringing destruction and disaster in her wake. Moreau and Philipe inject their characters with sultry new-wave hipness, giving the film a cool and devastating contemporary pathos. A shocking and offbeat story of two French lovers, Zorg (Jean-Hugues Anglade) and Betty (Beatrice Dalle), who fall into a deeply erotic and all-encompassing relationship. Zorg is a simple repairman in his mid-thirties who lives a relatively dull life in a remote, weathered shack until he meets Betty, a sexy, mercurial younger woman who challenges his way of thinking and forces him to change his life. When Betty and Zorg are not having wild and uninhibited sex (and joyously traipsing around naked), Zorg is writing his novel, an unpublished masterwork that Betty discovers and vehemently champions. Betty, prone to violent fits of passionate rage, attacks Zorg's boss and burns their shack down, leaving Zorg no choice but to join her on a series of spirited adventures. They move in with Betty's best friend and her boyfriend and for a brief time live a happy bohemian lifestyle, wild and crazy in love. But as the film progresses, Betty's mental illness becomes more apparent, she lives in a fitful manic world of passionate highs and lows while Zorg desperately attempts to coddle and comfort her.
