Travelling salesman Mariano (Karra Elejalde) falls asleep at the wheel late one night and lands his car in what turns out to be a secret marijuana farm. As he awakes, he finds that police have discovered the farm and set it ablaze. Mariano inhales a good deal of the resulting smoke and imagines that he sees the Virgin Mary. Word of his vision reaches a nearby evangelist who tells her followers (though she fails to mention that it was drug-induced). Before long, Mariano is approached by a local con man, who intends to use Mariano's experience as a way to make a lot of money very quickly. This unusual, yet dynamic and deeply personal film from Czech director Jan Nemec is based on Franz Kafka's LETTER TO MY FATHER. The film follows Nemec as he attempts to engage in a dialogue with his deceased mother. While alive, she had a problematic relationship with her son, and LATE NIGHT TALKS WITH MOTHER seems to be Nemec's very public way of coming to terms with these issues. The director embellishes his film with many ingenious touches that light up the screen, with the linking of personal events in his life to major upheavals in 20th century history being particularly effective.

Federico Fellini's classic drama, NIGHTS OF CABIRIA, is about a childlike prostitute who remains curiously unsullied by the brutal world she inhabits, even as the love and respectability she seeks elude her. Guilietta Masina plays Cabiria, a wide-eyed waif, a streetwalker living in a poor section of Rome where she owns her own little house, has a bank account, and dreams of a miracle. We follow her nights and days and watch as her boyfriend steals her purse and tosses her in the river, a movie star on the Via Veneto takes her home with him, and she visits the Madonna. When she meets an accountant who watches her act out her heart's longings while under hypnosis on a vaudeville stage, she thinks that at long last she has found her ticket out of the slums. Is it fate that led to their meeting? Is this finally a man who appreciates her for who she is? Is it true love? A legendary production plagued by problems almost from the outset, the making of QUE VIVA MEXICO cured Sergei Eisenstein of the desire ever to work in North America again. On the verge of leaving Hollywood in disgust in 1930, Eisenstein accepted financing from a group of investors, led by writer Upton Sinclair, to make an ambitious film on Mexican culture. When the director ran out of money before shooting was completed, Sinclair shut down production and seized the extant footage. More than 40 years later, the film was turned over to Eisenstein's assistant, Grigori Alexandrov, and he edited what remained according to the director's notes. The film consists of three vignettes: Sandunga, Manguei, and Fiesta. The first explores the precolonial world of the Incas, observing ancient architecture and detailing pagan religious practices and langorous mating rituals. In the second, a murderer is punished for his crime in an unusually graphic and barbaric manner. The third features a brilliantly photographed bullfight. There was to be a fourth episode, Soldadera, dealing with the 1910 revolution. Although it was never shot, Alexandrov describes Eisentein's intentions with the aid of still photos and sketches. Told with much compassion, two stories from Nobel Prize-winning writer Luigi Pirandello are brought to the screen from Italian masters the Taviani Brothers (PADRE PADRONE). In the first, an aging baritone singer in the opera is forced to give up his profession due to heart trouble. As he attempts to give up his dreams, his wife notices a strange phenomenon that literally keeps her awake at nights. Her husband, despite his personal sadness, is laughing uproariously in his sleep. The retiring singer tries to remember what tickles him so during his slumber and in turn analyzes what makes him laugh and what makes him live.
