Buy Dead or Alive: Final (DVD)

In the brilliant final installment in his DEAD OR ALIVE series, Takashi Miike crafts the story of a fearless cop who must save his son when an underworld consort of criminals and rebels accidently kidnap him. In a post-apocalyptic Yokohama, a dictator rules the land and, among other terrible rules, forbids procreation. A loose resistance forms among the city's criminal element and a group of rebels, but when they take Honda's (Riki Takeuchi) son, they must deal with his vengeance. The only force holding back Honda is Ryo (Sho Aikawa), an android who has his own plans. The finale to the trilogy perhaps is the most brilliant of the three - commenting on the nature of life through its use of violence, humor, and liberal literary and film allusions.DVD Features:Region [unknown]Keep CaseLetterboxed Widescreen - 1.85Additional Release Material: Original TrailerText/Photo Galleries: Trailer Gallery

He trains the bird for fighting, begins to make money, and begins a relationship with a gold-digging singer. As he makes money, though, he begins to become more and more corrupt--and it becomes apparent that his winning streak will not last. Pickpocket - Criterion Collection (DVD) Pickpocket - Criterion Collection (DVD) » Pickpocket - Criterion Collection (DVD)

Inspired by Fyodor Dostoyevsky s classic novel CRIME AND PUNISHMENT, Robert Bresson s PICKPOCKET tells the story of a man whose attraction to crime threatens to condemn him forever--spiritually as well as physically. Michel (Martin LaSalle), a young thief, is caught one afternoon, breaking his dying mother`s heart and shocking his friends. Fortunately for Michel, the police inspector (Jean Piligri) is unable to prosecute him, but the implications nonetheless sour Michel s once firm social standing. Trying to straighten his ways, Michel is again drawn to the criminal world, where under the tutelage of a master pickpocket he reverts back to thievery. All the while, his conscience nags at him, in the memory of his deceased mother as well as in the presence of Jeanne (Marika Green), a beautiful young woman who shows compassion toward the troubled Michel. Eventually, Michel s lucky streak ends, forcing him to find redemption in the most ironic of circumstances. Using his now-legendary simplistic storytelling style, Bresson is able to elevate his story to a supremely spiritual state, making for a stunningly powerful viewing experience. Delivering their lines slowly and somberly, the actors give the audience even more time for inner reflection, resulting in a cinematic masterwork.

Heart of Glass (DVD) Heart of Glass (DVD) » Heart of Glass (DVD)

In director Werner Herzog's most conceptual and perhaps most challenging film, HEART OF GLASS, a small Bavarian town is plunged into a mysterious and haunted despair when the owner of the town's preindustrial glass factory dies, failing to pass on the secret formula for its special ruby-colored glass. The aesthetic and narrative paths merge as the film leads viewers deep into the hypnotic and at times gothic plight of the workers and townspeople who stumble through the town, mesmerized and dazed, verging on murder and madness.Herzog sets the tone not only with the highly stylized performances of his actors, who were actually hypnotized, but also by his signature attention to landscape and ethereal environments, creating a mystical plane of unreality. Vistas of fog-ensconced gothic landscapes merge hypnotically with magical interior scenes of premodern glassblowing as Herzog's evocatively absurd melodrama plays out its somnambulant trajectory toward a slow and submerged climax in which art and life collide in a symbolic and allegorical spectacle.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic - 1.66Audio: Mono - German Subtitles - English - OptionalAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. Time of Favor (DVD) Time of Favor (DVD) » Time of Favor (DVD)

Orthodox Jewish writer-director Joseph Cedar tells a story of romance and intrigue on an Israeli settlement on the West Bank in TIME OF FAVOR. Menachem (Aki Avni) is a deeply religious young man and a superb soldier. Thanks in part to the influence of Rabbi Meltzer (Assi Dayan), Menachem gets the chance to create his own elite Orthodox unit for the Israeli army. Menachem also has a quiet crush on the rabbi`s daughter, Michal (Tinkerbell). He and Michal are both distraught when the rabbi tries to arrange Michal`s marriage to his best Yeshiva student, Pini (Edan Alterman), who is also Menachem`s friend. Michal is a fiercely independent young woman, who resents her father`s devotion to
Greater Israel
at the expense of his family. The situation gets far more complicated when Menachem is implicated in a fanatical plot to blow up the Dome of the Rock, the mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Cedar has created a moving romantic drama with elements of a tense political thriller, all captured against the beautiful backdrop of the Judean hills. Avni and Tinkerbell deliver nuanced and graceful performances. The film subtly extols the virtues of devout faith, while condemning religious and political fanaticism.
