A documentary on a vitally important aspect of Iranian society, OUR TIMES looks at the changing role of women to a backdrop of the 2002 Iranian elections. Shot by female director Rakshan Bani-Etemad, the film focuses on an audacious run for president by a woman who is part of a wider group of politically-charged Iranian females who have decided to run for office. Naturally this is all a bolt out of the blue for the ultraconservative Iranian society that spawned them, but makes for fascinating viewing for the rest of us.

An enigmatic woman seeking psychiatric help mistakes the office of her doctor for the tax attorney that works next door. Before he can correct her, she has already told the tax attorney too much about her personal life. Mutually committed now that secrets have been shared, they continue making appointments with each other, using the fluke of their meeting and their mistaken identities as a role play. Because Anna (Sandrine Bonnaire) is not seeing a professional analyst, she has no problem bending the truth of what she says and reinventing herself through each subsequent meeting. Meanwhile, William (Fabrice Luchini), who feels her neediness for him and receives her confessions with openness, imagines himself to be an emotional giant and romantic outlet, something his tax-attorney identity would never allow. By consulting his neighbor, the real psychiatrist (Michel Duchaussoy), William is granted the approval he needs to let his fantasy with Anna run its course.Director Patrice Leconte has a penchant for characters who pretend to be somebody they're not and in the process become that person (MAN ON THE TRAIN, GIRL ON THE BRIDGE), and this movie is his most pronounced meditation on that theme. The story, by Jerome Tonnerre, is likable and passionate without ever being saccharine or predictable. Do not allow the sorrow of grieving to interfere with the power of hatred and revenge. This message, delivered by a family matriarch (Marieta Severo), is clearly understood by the three sisters who are the title characters in THE THREE MARIAS. The sisters are called home when their father and two brothers are brutally murdered in separate slayings, all ordered by a man from their mother's past. The grieving widow and mother responds to the killings by commanding her daughters to act. She assigns each daughter a hitman in order to avenge the deaths. Various complications keep these mercenaries from carrying out their tasks and the sisters must take it upon themselves to finish the job, as each of the Marias targets one of the three killers.The eye-for-an-eye mentality of this Brazilian thriller is just one of many themes drawn from the Bible.
