A fast paced and vicious spaghetti western starring Klaus Kinski and Lou Castel, A BULLET FOR THE GENERAL begins as a gang of former Mexican rebels attempt to rob a train carrying munitions, which they plan to sell to a revolutionary named General Elias. One of the passengers on the train, a gringo named Bill Tate (Castel), helps the bandits steal the weapons, ingratiating him with the leader of the bandits, El Chuncho, who accepts him into his gang. However, Tate is really an assassin sent by the Mexican government to kill General Elias, who is an old friend of El Chuncho's. Denys Arcand delivers a beautiful film with THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS, the story of a man on his deathbed who is joined by his distant son and all his closest friends throughout the last--wonderful and loving--days of his life. A follow-up to 1986's THE DECLINE OF THE AMERICAN EMPIRE, the same characters from that movie reappear this time around. Now Remy (Remy Girard), the horny history teacher, is hospitalized and in pain. But at the urging of his wife Louise (Dorothee Berryman), Remy's son Sebastian (Stephane Rousseau) comes to his aid. Sebastian is a banker who tosses cash around, paying hospital administrators, union workers, Remy's former students, and even a local heroin dealer, to help make his father's last days of life as comfortable as possible. Along with this financial commitment also comes love, and the relationship between this father and son is touching.The sometimes raucous and comic mood of the film, generated by perverted stories and silly jokes, stands in striking contrast to this serious story of life, sickness, and dying. Ineffectual businessman Andres (Carlos Hip3/4lito) seeks an escape from his unhappy home life that turns deadly, in Spanish director Angel Fernandez Santos's debut feature. Trapped in a loveless marriage, Andres stays with his family for the sake of his son, David (JosU VelBzquez). While in the process of taking over the family business from his stepfather, he encounters beautiful shop girl Isabel (Cayetana Guillen Cuervo), and is immediately drawn to her. He begins an affair with her, and becomes obsessed with his new lover after she is assaulted and her apartment destroyed. Isabel, however, has other loyalties: her boyfriend Paco (Nancho Novo), a vicious drug dealer, is currently in jail, and the pair needs money desperately. Isabel, in classic femme fatale mode, suggests to her susceptible paramour that together they kidnap Andres's own son. A low-budget endeavor, HAZLO POR MI succeeds on every count, with finely-drawn characters and gripping, well-paced action.
