Filmed in Ghana, Brazil, and Colombia, COBRA VERDE is a visually astonishing 19th-century true-life tale about a Brazilian bandit known as Cobra Verde (played by the ever-intense Klaus Kinski) who is exiled to West Africa to rejuvenate the slave trade. Once he's in Africa, his sanity is put to the ultimate test, as he is an unwanted outsider in a foreign, uncultivated world. Holed up in a deserted slave fortress on the coast, Cobra Verde, like many Herzog/Kinski creations before him, goes about constructing an elaborate and unlikely scheme--in this case to build up a vast slave trade ruled under his iron fist. His plans fall apart, however, when the civil wars waged by the insane Leopard King come crashing down on Cobra Verde and his plans. When the bandit is rescued by the king's equally crazy brother, Cobra Verde gathers a vast army of Amazon women warriors and plans to regain his dominance. The exquisitely photographed dusty and alien landscape of the African coast is juxtaposed evocatively with the ridiculous behavior of the slave traders as represented by Cobra Verde. Herzog crafts a deft and powerful vision of human folly and the eventual tragedy that follows, chronicling Cobra Verde's descent into total madness and self-destruction.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreen - 1.77Single Side - Dual LayerAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - German Dolby Surround - EnglishAdditional Release Materials: Audio Commentary - 1.Werner Herzog - Director Trailers:

Alexander Nevsky (DVD) Alexander Nevsky (DVD) » Alexander Nevsky (DVD)

Nikolai Cherkassov stars as the legenday Alexander Nevsky in Sergei Eisenstein's masterpiece of propaganda, made with the assistance of Stalin, to stir up Soviet audiences in anticipation of a Nazi invasion. Withdrawn from release after the signing of the Hitler-Stalin pact in 1939, it returned to Russian theaters in 1941, following the commencement of hostilities. The film is set in 13th-century Russia, as the religious brotherhood of the Teutonic Knights runs rampant throughout the land. Following the brutal sack of the city of Pskov, the people of Novgorod must decide if they will fight the invaders or, like other cities, bribe them to obtain peace. Opting to fight, they call on their greatest military leader, Alexander Nevsky, who is still recuperating with his troops from defeating the Swedish army. The historic battle on the frozen surface of Lake Peipus, pitting the peasant army of Nevsky against the better-equipped German force, is one of the most impressive spectacles in film history, a visual symphony of mutual slaughter as powerful now as on the day of its release. Because of Eisenstein's use of linkage--seamless Hollywood-style editing rather than intellectual montage--and Prokofiev's evocative, rhythmically inventive score, ALEXANDER NEVSKY might be the most accessible of his films.DVD Features:Region 1 Encoding

Soldier of Orange (DVD) Soldier of Orange (DVD) » Soldier of Orange (DVD)

A gripping World War II tale about the Nazi invasion of Holland and its effects upon six wealthy, boisterous college students, SOLDIER OF ORANGE brought director Paul Verhoeven international acclaim. The film focuses on two of the friends, Erik and Gus. Erik escapes to England, and (against his inclinations), joins a resistance group, and eventually becomes an assistant to the Dutch Queen. Gus, too, leaves Holland and joins a resistance group, but when he murders his friend Bobby -- who has become a Nazi spy -- the Germans exact an unkind revenge upon him. Perhaps the most perplexing of the six men is Jacques, who stays in Holland and continues his studies, unimpeded and uncaring about the war and the Nazi takeover. Based on the true story of Erik Hazelhoff.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.66Single Side - Dual LayerAudio: Dolby Digital MonoAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. Phantom of the Opera (DVD) Phantom of the Opera (DVD) » Phantom of the Opera (DVD)

Italian horror maestro Dario Argento tackles Gaston Leroux's tale of love and revenge set in a Paris Opera House, which comes complete with its very own phantom (Julian Sands)--a tortured man who was abandoned as a child and raised by the house's resident rodents. With his usual visual flair, moody atmosphere, and penchant for blood and gore, the director presents a very different twist on this timeless story. His daughter, the beautiful Asia Argento (XXX, TRAUMA), stars as the phantom's love interest and aspiring opera star.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseAnamorphic WidescreenPan& Scan - 1.33Dual Side - Single LayerAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1. Zombie 4: After Death (DVD) » Zombie 4: After Death (DVD)

Although its numerical title seems to indicate that this is yet another sequel to Lucio Fulci's ZOMBIE (itself often listed as ZOMBI 2 to capitalize on the success of DAWN OF THE DEAD, which was also known as ZOMBI) and ZOMBIE 3, ZOMBIE 4 is actually a (what else?) zombie movie originally known as AFTER DEATH that was renamed to link to its supposed precursors. Set on a verdant tropical island where, 20 years before, a voodoo priest turned all of its inhabitants into the living dead, ZOMBIE 4 finds the only non-zombie descendent of the island returning to her homeland with a band of beer guzzling mercenaries. Soon, the mercenaries find themselves face to face with some rather energetic and hungry zombies while, across the island, a team of scientists unwittingly create even more of the flesh eating corpses. Much in the same vein as ZOMBI 3, ZOMBIE 4 is filled with gore, gratuitous nudity, and just as many laughs as shocks, making it another in a long line of entertaining Italian zombie films.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull FrameAudio: Stereo - EnglishInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive Menus
