THE SWEET HOUSE OF HORRORS is one of Lucio Fulci's later films that was, strangely, made for Italian TV. In it, a masked man breaks into a couple's house and brutally murders them in a fantastically gory scene, leaving their two children orphaned. After the tragedy, the children are taken in by an aunt and uncle but are haunted by the loss of their parents. Set in Mali, one of the poorest countries in the world and a place far removed from the twentieth century, Mr. Sissako's entry into the 2000 SEEN BY... series is a moving meditation on the state of Africa. A semi-documentary, the film has Mr. Sissako going back to Sokolo, Mali from France to see his father for New Year's Eve 1999. In Sokolo, he and his father listen to the millennial celebrations in Paris over the radio, just about the only piece of the modern world to be found in the village. Andre Techine's BAROCCO takes place during a local election in Amsterdam, where a small-time boxer named Samson (Gerard Depardieu) is paid to create a scandal by saying he had a homosexual affair with one of the candidates. Although Samson is reluctant at first to get involved, his lover, Laure (Isabelle Adjani), persuades him to agree and use the money to escape the city. However, after Samson takes a large sum of money from one candidate, he accepts an equal amount from another. When the situation blows up in his face, Samson is murdered by his double, a gangster, and chaos ensues. Over the course of her career as a writer and filmmaker, Catherine Breillat (ROMANCE, FAT GIRL) has never shied away from controversial topics, using both mediums to explore her strong feminist opinions. Joining a generation of similarly taboo-breaking French directors such as Francois Ozon and Gaspar Noe, Breillat has no problem displaying explicit material to her audience and forcing them to confront their own assumptions about the relations between men and women. In ANATOMY OF HELL, based on her own novel, she presents a largely allegorical scenario positing that all men are inherently fearful of female sexuality. A gay man (ex porn star Rocco Siffredi) prevents a woman (former Chanel and Gaultier model Amira Casar) from killing herself in a nightclub. Thrown together by this fated moment, she offers to pay him to watch her in the most intimate way--leading to a confrontational exploration of male and female psychology and misogyny. Shot on location in both Palestine and Israel, PARADISE NOW is an enthralling drama about the possible motivations and actions of two suicide bombers. Director Hany Abu-Assad meticulously researched the subject before co-authoring the script with colleague Bero Beyer, and fought off a few armed Palestinians in Nablus, which is where the bulk of the film`s shooting took place. The story follows two young Palestinian men, Said (Kais Nashef) and Khaled (Ali Suliman), whose lives in the West Bank city have ground to a halt. But when a shadowy figure named Jamal (Amer Hlehel) offers them a shot at martyrdom by carrying out a suicide attack in Tel Aviv, the two men`s lives are suddenly invigorated. The film follows their final days, as they grapple with their consciences, visit family and friends--and in Said`s case, a young woman he has been flirting with--and prepare for the attack. But they find both practical and emotional issues stand in their way, leading to an anguished and entirely moving finale to Abu-Assad`s film.The difficult production of PARADISE NOW saw crew members abandoning the set amid fears for their lives, location manager Hassan Titi getting kidnapped, a land mine exploding 300 meters away from the set, and Prime Minister Yasser Arafat stepping in to aid the film. Although the subject matter is bleak, Abu-Assad pulls off a masterstroke by lacing the script with black humor, even having the two men nervously joke around as they film their farewell speeches to their families. But ultimately the movie offers a compelling portrait of two men driven to extremes by their beliefs, and examines all the anxieties inherent in such a decision as the one taken with alarming regularity by Palestinian men such as Said and Khaled.
