Calling on his own experiences as an aviator in WWI as well as those of his comrades, Jean Renoir's antiwar masterpiece bids farewell to the class constrictions of European society and calls for the unity of humankind across class and national boundaries. Set in the German prison camps of WWI, the film stars Jean Gabin as Marechal, and Marcel Dalio as Rosenthal. Like the charming aristocrat de Boldieu (Pierre Fresnay), these two French aviators were shot down and now spend most of their time escaping from German prison camps before inevitably being recaptured.
Between escapes, they do what they can to amuse themselves, which includes running a talent show, but after a tunnel they've dug is discovered, the three are sent to Wintersborn, a forbidding fortress of a prison, which is commanded by former ace pilot von Rauffenstein (Erich von Stroheim). The humane commandant practices noblesse oblige toward de Boldieu, hoping for an alliance across national lines. But he comes to learn that this phrase has a different meaning for the Frenchman. One of the great films of all time, GRAND ILLUSION perhaps most purely embodies director Jean Renoir's characterstic humanism, manifested less here in camera technique than an instinctive ability to educe truthful performances from his cast.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseDual-LayerAudio Essay - Peter CowieRare Filmed Introduction by RenoirArchival Radio Presentation: Renoir and Erich von Stroheim accept GRAND ILLUSION'S Best Foreign Film Award at the 1938 New York Film Critics Circle AwardsRe-release Press Book Excerpts: Renoir's LetterTo the Projectionist, Cast Bios, Essay on Renoir by Von Stroheim, Essays About the Film's Title and Recently Recovered Camera Negative

THE SWEET HOUSE OF HORRORS is one of Lucio Fulci's later films that was, strangely, made for Italian TV. In it, a masked man breaks into a couple's house and brutally murders them in a fantastically gory scene, leaving their two children orphaned. After the tragedy, the children are taken in by an aunt and uncle but are haunted by the loss of their parents. Desperate to get them back, the two tykes succeed in conjuring a supernatural force that brings their parents back, but not without other, more disastrous, effects.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAudio: Stereo - Italian Stereo - EnglishInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive Menus

Set in Mali, one of the poorest countries in the world and a place far removed from the twentieth century, Mr. Sissako's entry into the 2000 SEEN BY... series is a moving meditation on the state of Africa. A semi-documentary, the film has Mr. Sissako going back to Sokolo, Mali from France to see his father for New Year's Eve 1999. In Sokolo, he and his father listen to the millennial celebrations in Paris over the radio, just about the only piece of the modern world to be found in the village. Thoughtful, beautiful, and sad, Abderrahmane Sissako's film is a truly unique and profound take on the beginning of the new millennium.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive MenusText/Photo Galleries: Filmographies& AwardsDVD-ROM Features: Weblink

Anatomy Of Hell (DVD) Anatomy Of Hell (DVD) » Anatomy Of Hell (DVD)

Over the course of her career as a writer and filmmaker, Catherine Breillat (ROMANCE, FAT GIRL) has never shied away from controversial topics, using both mediums to explore her strong feminist opinions. Joining a generation of similarly taboo-breaking French directors such as Francois Ozon and Gaspar Noe, Breillat has no problem displaying explicit material to her audience and forcing them to confront their own assumptions about the relations between men and women. In ANATOMY OF HELL, based on her own novel, she presents a largely allegorical scenario positing that all men are inherently fearful of female sexuality. A gay man (ex porn star Rocco Siffredi) prevents a woman (former Chanel and Gaultier model Amira Casar) from killing herself in a nightclub. Thrown together by this fated moment, she offers to pay him to watch her in the most intimate way--leading to a confrontational exploration of male and female psychology and misogyny. Never one to back down from the controversial, Catherine Breillat's explicit film ANATOMY OF HELL is perhaps the work that gets closest to her theoretical preoccupations.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.78Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. Paradise Now (DVD) Paradise Now (DVD) » Paradise Now (DVD)

Shot on location in both Palestine and Israel, PARADISE NOW is an enthralling drama about the possible motivations and actions of two suicide bombers. Director Hany Abu-Assad meticulously researched the subject before co-authoring the script with colleague Bero Beyer, and fought off a few armed Palestinians in Nablus, which is where the bulk of the film`s shooting took place. The story follows two young Palestinian men, Said (Kais Nashef) and Khaled (Ali Suliman), whose lives in the West Bank city have ground to a halt. But when a shadowy figure named Jamal (Amer Hlehel) offers them a shot at martyrdom by carrying out a suicide attack in Tel Aviv, the two men`s lives are suddenly invigorated. The film follows their final days, as they grapple with their consciences, visit family and friends--and in Said`s case, a young woman he has been flirting with--and prepare for the attack. But they find both practical and emotional issues stand in their way, leading to an anguished and entirely moving finale to Abu-Assad`s film. The difficult production of PARADISE NOW saw crew members abandoning the set amid fears for their lives, location manager Hassan Titi getting kidnapped, a land mine exploding 300 meters away from the set, and Prime Minister Yasser Arafat stepping in to aid the film. Although the subject matter is bleak, Abu-Assad pulls off a masterstroke by lacing the script with black humor, even having the two men nervously joke around as they film their farewell speeches to their families. But ultimately the movie offers a compelling portrait of two men driven to extremes by their beliefs, and examines all the anxieties inherent in such a decision as the one taken with alarming regularity by Palestinian men such as Said and Khaled.
