In the second part of Sergei Eisenstein's grand film, a grieving Ivan (Nikolai Cherkassov) withdraws from Moscow to his estate at Uglich after the death of the empress, less trustful than ever of those who surround him. His solitude is augmented by the defection of his military chief, Prince Kurbsky (Mikahil Nazvanov), to Poland.
But when the people of Moscow make a mass pilgrimage to petition for his return to Moscow, he realizes that he has an opportunity to increase his power while diminishing that of the boyars. After his former friend Philip the Monk (Andrei Abrikosov) betrays his friendship by siding with the boyars, Ivan unleashes the Oprichniki, a secret police network that he has developed to gather information about his enemies and, when necessary, eliminate them. Under the directon of Ivan's aunt Euphrosyne (Serafima Birman), the boyars hatch a plot to assassinate the czar and put Euphrosyne's mentally defective son, Vladimir (Pavel Kadochnikov), on the throne. But after Ivan deftly eludes death, all of his opponents, including the boyars, the aristocracy, and the Polish army, unite to attempt a final assault on his rule. The visual splendor of Part 2 is enhanced by two scenes featuring Eisenstein's first experiments with color, an element for which he developed an elaborate thematic scheme.DVD Features:Region 0 EncodingKeep Case

One Missed Call (DVD) One Missed Call (DVD) » One Missed Call (DVD)

Takashi Miike, the director of such cult classics as the DEAD OR ALIVE trilogy, ICHI THE KILLER, and AUDITION, takes on the Japanese horror film with ONE MISSED CALL. Mixing in elements of Hideo Nakata`s THE RING and Takashi Shimizu`s JU-ON: THE GRUDGE, Miike creates a scarefest sure to rattle even the most experienced horror movie lover. Pop sensation Kou Shibasaki stars as Yumi Nakamura, a teenager who gets freaked out when her best friend, Yoko (Anna Nagata), gets a call on her cell phone--from herself, screaming, dated three days in the future. Three days later, at the exact time of the call--which had an ominous, strange ring tone--it all comes true, with Yoko screaming as she dies. The calls continue as Yumi`s friends fear that they will be next to hear the ring tone that foretells death. Meanwhile, Yumi is joined by Hiroshi (Shin`ichi Tsutsumi), whose sister was recently killed and who wants to get to the bottom of the mystery before more young women die. Miike masterfully manipulates the audience, with plenty of scares around each corner, lots of terrifying images, violently dizzying flash cutting, and creepy music by Koji Endo. ONE MISSED CALL is one scary movie that should not be missed.

Fellini's Roma (DVD) Fellini's Roma (DVD) » Fellini's Roma (DVD)

ROMA, the Federico Fellini-directed benchmark of the Italian New Wave, explores the city of Rome from several different perspectives, giving it a mystical life of its own that hangs in the balance between its rich history and its modern identity. With no real chronology, ROMA is a tapestry of bizarre scenes and familiar images (Fellini peppers the film with easily identifiable references to his earlier works) that blend together into a gorgeous visual carnival. Typical of Fellini, with the carnival comes a critique--and ROMA tears through the city's political and religious history, satirizing the Catholic church and various faces of Italian government from Renaissance times through Mussolini's reign and on into the 1960s. While the camera lavishes affectionately over Rome's art and architecture and is clearly a tribute to the Eternal City, most of the sets in the film are constructed, reinforcing Fellini's narrative imagination and keeping viewers caught in a perpetual contradiction between reality and fantasy, history and the present, fact and fiction.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseLetterboxed - 1.66Audio: Dolby Digital Mono - Italian Dolby Digital Mono - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1. This melancholic, brooding romantic thriller stars Zhang Ziyi (HERO; CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON) as Ding Hui, a Chinese woman who is part of a secret anti-Japanese terrorist organization in 1931 Shanghai. Three years earlier, under her real name, Cynthia, she was a factory worker in Manchuria carrying on a romance with a Japanese man named Itami (Toru Nakamura) who has since become head of Japan's Shanghai branch of the secret service. As Japan and China prepare to go to war, Itami and Cynthia are doomed to face off against each other. Meanwhile, an innocent couple gets caught in the crossfire during a train station shootout, and the grief-stricken survivor, Szeto (Ye Liu), becomes a double agent in the war between the Chinese and Japanese spy groups.PURPLE BUTTERFLY is all about mood: lots of lingering close-ups of characters sulking in the rain, smoking lots of cigarettes in squalid rooms, or dying slowly from bullets lodged near the heart. The film's dreamy romance, restless handheld camerawork, and nonlinear plot recall the films of Wong Kar Wai, and fans of that director's work should be similarly seduced by this elegant Asian period film noir. A mesmerizing score by Jorg Lemberg helps the disparate pieces of the puzzle fall into place.DVD Features:Region (unknown)Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Surround Sound 5.1 EnglishAdditional Release Material: Theatrical Trailer PreviewsDVD Rom Features: Weblinks

The Fangoria Fright Pack (DVD) » The Fangoria Fright Pack (DVD)

The FANGORIA FRIGHT PACK presents a threesome of low-budget gorefests from the annals of the hallowed horror magazine. In THE LAST HORROR MOVIE (2003), a wedding photographer (Kevin Howarth) filming a documentary about serial killers becomes one himself and chronicles his crimes on camera for a disturbing meta-movie about watching horror movies. In SKINNED DEEP (2004), a vacationing family on a cross-country trip get a flat tire in a backwoods hamlet and are offered help by a local woman whose kin turn out to be a pack of demented killers. As the unsuspecting visitors are brutally murdered by the likes of a plate-throwing dwarf (LEPRECHAUN`s Warwick Davis) and a disfigured boy with an enlarged brain on the outside of his head, the sole surviving daughter (Karoline Brandt) struggles to escape before she becomes the psychos` next victim. And in DEAD MEAT (2004), Spanish tourists Helena (Marian Araujo) and Martin (David Ryan) literally stumble upon a legion of flesh-eating zombies created by a mutated strain of mad-cow disease in the rural Irish countryside. It isn`t long before Martin himself succumbs to zombification, leaving Helena to partner with local gravedigger Desmond (David Mallard) to fight off the army of undead with creatively zany techniques involving everything from shovels to vacuum cleaners.
