Takashi Miike, the director of such cult classics as the DEAD OR ALIVE trilogy, ICHI THE KILLER, and AUDITION, takes on the Japanese horror film with ONE MISSED CALL. Mixing in elements of Hideo Nakata`s THE RING and Takashi Shimizu`s JU-ON: THE GRUDGE, Miike creates a scarefest sure to rattle even the most experienced horror movie lover. Pop sensation Kou Shibasaki stars as Yumi Nakamura, a teenager who gets freaked out when her best friend, Yoko (Anna Nagata), gets a call on her cell phone--from herself, screaming, dated three days in the future. Three days later, at the exact time of the call--which had an ominous, strange ring tone--it all comes true, with Yoko screaming as she dies. The calls continue as Yumi`s friends fear that they will be next to hear the ring tone that foretells death. Meanwhile, Yumi is joined by Hiroshi (Shin`ichi Tsutsumi), whose sister was recently killed and who wants to get to the bottom of the mystery before more young women die. Miike masterfully manipulates the audience, with plenty of scares around each corner, lots of terrifying images, violently dizzying flash cutting, and creepy music by Koji Endo. ONE MISSED CALL is one scary movie that should not be missed.

ROMA, the Federico Fellini-directed benchmark of the Italian New Wave, explores the city of Rome from several different perspectives, giving it a mystical life of its own that hangs in the balance between its rich history and its modern identity. With no real chronology, ROMA is a tapestry of bizarre scenes and familiar images (Fellini peppers the film with easily identifiable references to his earlier works) that blend together into a gorgeous visual carnival. Typical of Fellini, with the carnival comes a critique--and ROMA tears through the city's political and religious history, satirizing the Catholic church and various faces of Italian government from Renaissance times through Mussolini's reign and on into the 1960s. This melancholic, brooding romantic thriller stars Zhang Ziyi (HERO; CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON) as Ding Hui, a Chinese woman who is part of a secret anti-Japanese terrorist organization in 1931 Shanghai. Three years earlier, under her real name, Cynthia, she was a factory worker in Manchuria carrying on a romance with a Japanese man named Itami (Toru Nakamura) who has since become head of Japan's Shanghai branch of the secret service. As Japan and China prepare to go to war, Itami and Cynthia are doomed to face off against each other. Meanwhile, an innocent couple gets caught in the crossfire during a train station shootout, and the grief-stricken survivor, Szeto (Ye Liu), becomes a double agent in the war between the Chinese and Japanese spy groups.PURPLE BUTTERFLY is all about mood: lots of lingering close-ups of characters sulking in the rain, smoking lots of cigarettes in squalid rooms, or dying slowly from bullets lodged near the heart. The film's dreamy romance, restless handheld camerawork, and nonlinear plot recall the films of Wong Kar Wai, and fans of that director's work should be similarly seduced by this elegant Asian period film noir.
