With KADOSH (meaning Sacred) director Amos Gitai paints a powerful picture of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Jerusalem's isolated Mea Shearim district. KADOSH follows two sisters through two events initiated by the community's Rabbi: an arranged marriage and an arranged divorce. Although Malka (Meital Barda) is in love with Yaakov (Sami Hori), who broke his connection to Orthodox Judaism when he joined the army, she consents to marrying the man to whom the Rabbi has willed her, and she quickly finds herself trapped in a miserable, abusive relationship. Meanwhile, Malka's sister Rivka (Yael Abecassis), is forced to end her 10-year marriage to Meir (Yoram Hattab), because she has not fulfilled her obligation to bear him a child. The film presents difficult issues both about the way that women are devalued and mistreated in this community, and about the extent to which the rigors of this traditional faith prohibit any experience of the outside world. WINTER SLEEPERS takes place in Germany's mountainous Berchtesgaden region. The connections between its characters--translator Rebecca (Floriane Daniel), nurse Laura (Marie-Lou Sellem), ski instructor Marco (Heino Ferch), and projectionist Rene (Ulrich Matthes)--are unclear until the day Rene passes Laura's villa. Rene looks inside and sees Rebecca, who lives with Laura, making love with Marco. On a whim, Rene drives off in Marco's car, only to crash into a van driven by local farmer Theo (Josef Bierbichler). The car ends up covered in snow down an incline. Theo's daughter Maria (Sofia Dirscheri) is injured. After taking photographs of the accident, Rene stumbles away. Maria is rushed to hospital and has an operation, at which Laura assists. As in his hyperkinetic RUN LOLA RUN, director Tom Tykwer shows the deeper possibilities of seemingly random encounters.At the hospital, Laura worries about Maria; out of it, she takes up with Rene. Rene suffers from short-term memory loss. Rebecca, who is always dressed in red, is unhappy with Marco. Marco hunts for his stolen car. And Theo can't convince anyone that another car was involved in the accident. Gradually, events spiral out of control. Lucrecia Martel (LA CIENAGA) returns with THE HOLY GIRL, a powerfully understated coming-of-age tale in which a teenage girl grows up in a religiously fervent society. The film takes place during a medical convention in an Argentinean hotel, where its characters stumble upon each other. Amalia (Maria Alche) is a pretty, conflicted teenager who has become consumed with the religious concept of vocation, which she has been learning in Catholic school. She lives with her divorced mother, Helena (Mercedes Moran), who works at the hotel, and spends most of her time with her mischievous friend Josefina (Julieta Zylberberg). But when a seemingly random stranger rubs up against her in a crowd, she begins to think that she has found her calling. It turns out that the stranger is an influential doctor, Jano (Carlos Belloso), with whom Helena has coincidentally begun to fall in love. The more that Amalia considers this chance encounter, the more determined she is to pursue it.As if adolescence weren't difficult enough, growing up submerged in a deeply religious Latin American culture makes it all the more challenging. Featuring impressively reserved performances across the board, Martel's film bravely shies away from overly dramatic confrontations. It's the unspoken messages that matter the most in the audacious and deeply luminous THE HOLY GIRL.This film screened as part of the 42nd New York Film Festival organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
