L'AVVENTURA, one of Michelangelo Antonioni's most gripping works, features expert photography and an electric cast that, together, seem to try to fool the audience. As a result, viewers are engrossed as they watch the majestic film unroll, waiting for Antonioni to reveal a piece of plot or offer up any cinematic clue to help them solve the film's mystery. In a style that would later be known as Hitchcockian, that moment never comes. One summery Saturday afternoon a group of friends living in Rome departs on a yachting trip out to a local island. Two of the group, Anna (Lea Massari) and Sandro (Gabriele Ferzetti), young lovers considering marriage, have a dispute; that afternoon, Sandro announces that Anna is missing. A thorough search of the island is made on Anna's behalf, but she is never found, and Sandro, who remains relatively unconcerned, is never questioned. In fact, before the yachting group even returns to the mainland, Sandro tries to pick up Anna's best friend, Claudia (Monica Vitti). Still, he is not even considered suspicious, but viewers can smell a rat. Claudia and Sandro galavant through the Italian countryside, supposedly investigating Claudia's disappearance, but their true motives are never clear, even in the last--entirely enigmatic--scene of the movie.Features:Commentary by Film Historian Gene YoungbloodOriginal Theatrical TrailerCollection of Rare Photos on the Works of Michelangelo Antonioni

With an original title named after the French term for male genitalia (LES VALSEUSES), Bertrand Blier's early feature lets viewers know right away what they're getting into. For better or worse, Blier doesn't disappoint. Gerard Depardieu and Patrick Dewaere star in Blier's bawdy comedy as Jean-Claude and Pierrot, two drifters who roam about stealing and taking whatever women they want, usually by force. Apparently on a search for nothing in particular except to flout bourgeois values whenever possible, the shameless duo finds targets wherever they turn (including two of France's most prominent actresses, Jeanne Moreau and Isabelle Huppert). Eventually, the two stumble across an unlikely comrade in Marie-Ange (Miou-Miou), a taciturn hairdresser who exerts an oddly calming influence on the rambunctious pair. A daring blend of freewheeling comedy, rampant sex, and unabashed misogyny, Blier's film is not for the timid, but for those who like their humor crude and graphic-and who want to see Depardieu and Dewaere going head-to-head--GOING PLACES certainly won't disappoint.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic - 1.66Audio: Mono - French, English Subtitles - English - OptionalAdditional Release Material: TrailersInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive Menus

With the dramatic crime thriller RIFIFI, blacklisted American director Jules Dassin returned to the cinema triumphantly. In addition to directing, Dassin co-wrote the script and appeared (under the name Perlo Vita) as Cesar the Italian safecracker. Cesar is one of the gang formed by the gaunt Tony (Jean Sevais), who has just returned to Paris from prison. The others are family man Jo (Carl Mohner) and the ebullient Mario (Robert Manuel). The four men plan a jewelry heist--and the almost 30-minute long robbery scene at the center of the film has become one of the cinema's classic sequences. They break into an upstairs apartment, tie up the couple who live there, and smash through the floor--carefully collecting the debris in an umbrella. Then, they lower themselves into the jewelry store, drill through the safe, and return the way they came. Dassin forgoes both music and dialogue as he shows the robbery in meticulous detail--and the sequence is riveting. The gang has barely completed the job, when unplanned incidents threaten, the police appear unexpectedly, a rival gang gets wind of the robbery, there is a kidnapping, and in the skullduggery that follows, only the honor of the gang survives.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Single Side - Dual LayerRSDLAudio: Mono - French Mono - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Production Interview - 1.
