Yasu is a teenager confined to a wheelchair. THE SHOE, a Latvian film from 1998, is a uniquely bleak take on the classic fairytale CINDERELLA. The Latvian coast is closely patrolled by Russian guards who are looking for people who may attempt to swim to the Soviet Union. One day, a group of soldiers find a woman`s shoe in the sand, and trace the footsteps leading up to it to a nearby village. Once there, the men undertake an exhaustive search of the female villagers, asking each one to try on the shoe to see who it fits. But that`s where the similarities with CINDERELLA end, for once they find the perfect match, the woman in question will be in dire trouble, leading to some darkly comic moments as the film winds to its conclusion.
