In an effort to counterbalance the dark and heavy mood that has infested Eastern European cinema after the breakup of Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, writer-director Srdjan Karanovic made LOVING GLANCES (SJAJ U OCIMA), a romantic comedy that examines the troubled region with feelings of hope rather then despair. Labud (Senad Alihodzic) is an ethnic refugee in search of his old girlfriend when he meets and falls in love with Romana, even though the recent war had made their ethnic groups mortal enemies. LOVING GLANCES explores the Yugoslav society after the collapse of the country, but does not dwell excessively on the war, choosing rather to focus on the way such turmoil affected regular people trying to go about their lives. When a small plane crashes near the Mexican town of Zacatecas, local farmers are in for a surprise: the plane carries an illegal cargo, and when the pilot dies, it is up to them to dispose of the drugs. With his dying words the pilot explains that he was attempting to sell the drugs to raise money for his daughter's heart transplant, and the farmers, touched, decide to carry the operation through. They load the cargo into boxes made of cactus fruit called tunas, and head for California. Claude Chabrol traces the sordid and sad trajectory of Nazi-occupied France during World War II through the tragic, tumble-down journey of one woman. Isabelle Hupert plays Marie, a young woman with two children who has carved out a life for herself during her husbands absence, barely managing to feed her children, gleaning some happiness from jukeboxes and girlfriends, and by performing and occasional amateur abortion for her neighbors. When her shell-shocked husband returns from the labor camps, Marie takes matters into her own hands and turns her skills into a booming abortion business, boarding prostitute friends on the side and taking a collaborator for a lover.
