Director Istvan Szabo, as he so masterfully does in FATHER and 25 FIREMAN'S STREET, structures LOVE FILM around a series of flashbacks that revel in and indulge the memories of Jansci (Andras Balint), a 27-year-old Hungarian living in Budapest. Jansci plans to go to France to visit Kata (Judit Halasz), a woman his own age who was his constant companion and friend in his childhood. LOVE FILM's main theme is the nature of this rare relationship--a boy and a girl who, prior to puberty, share an intimacy similar to adult lovers and are even denounced by their Communist Youth League for their special friendship. But when they become young adults, their attempt at a more romantic, sexual relationship proves to be more awkward.LOVE FILM is staged as a series of overlapping sequences--at one point, the young boy watches the man he will become ride by on his bicycle--and many scenes, such as the children ice-skating on a makeshift rink in a vacant lot, carry the feeling of lost innocence. Szabo also deals with the loss of political innocence when the Russian invasion puts down the government's liberal reforms, causing Kata to flee to France, where she becomes a fashion designer. When Jancsi goes to visit her, they try to begin a romance based on their childhood friendship and a recent spate of love letters. However, as the two find out, love is never easy....DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseLetterboxed - 1.66Audio: Mono - Hungarian Subtitles - English - OptionalInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive Menus

Yi Yi (DVD) Yi Yi (DVD) » Yi Yi (DVD)

Focusing on a typical family--parents, two children, and an elderly grandmother--living in a small apartment in Taipei, YI YI (A ONE AND A TWO) is about the patterns of daily life. It includes a wedding, a funeral, a first date, a last date, a birth, and a death. The film follows each member of the Jian family carefully, giving each one equal time, completely developing each character. NJ (Wu Nienjen), the father of the family, struggles with a dead-end job at a technology firm while reexamining his marriage when he meets his high school sweetheart, Sherry (Ke Suyun), after 30 years. NJ's teenage daughter, Ting-Ting (Kelly Lee), has a selfless demeanor and a naive interest in everything, which diffuses the complexity of her high school life. Her little brother, Yang-Yang (Jonathan Chang), is an adorable five-year-old troublemaker who's in love with a pesky girl in his class. And Yang-Yang's mother, Min-Min (Elaine Jin), grieves for her dying mother (Tang Runyun) while coping with her own middle age in a rapidly maturing family.Edward Yang, director of 1991's A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY, presents a careful, direct, meticulously photographed film with YI YI. Brassy shots of Taipei reflected in the windows of a moving car are offset with slow choreographed sequences using the streetlights to narrate little moral tales. Perhaps the most powerful gem in this film is the magical character of Mr. Ota (Issey Ogata), NJ's Japanese business associate, whose optimistic life perspective will inspire and delight YI YI's viewers.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseWidescreen Anamorphic - 1.85Audio: Dolby Digital Stereo - MandarinAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. Knife in the Water - Criterion Collection (DVD) Knife in the Water - Criterion Collection (DVD) » Knife in the Water - Criterion Collection (DVD)

Roman Polanski's first feature-length film is a suspenseful three-person chamber drama reminiscent of the work of Ingmar Bergman. KNIFE IN THE WATER was filmed in the director's native Poland and financed through government subsidies. Although denounced by local authorities as devoid of any significant social or political content, the film caused a minor sensation in the West, was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Foreign Film, and even made the cover of Time magazine. The action takes place almost entirely within the confined setting of a sailboat owned by a wealthy journalist (Leon Niemczyk) and his much younger wife (Jolanta Umecka). On their way to the lake for a weekend of sailing, they are accosted by a young hitchhiker (Zygmunt Malanowicz) who jumps in front of their car, forcing them to stop. Annoyed by the youth's daredevil posturing, the journalist nevertheless decides to invite him to join the couple on their boat, initiating a series of playfully competitive games between the two men. Playfulness soon gives way to hostility, however, as each tries to outshine and humiliate the other in front of the woman, who appears to be taking a more than casual interest in her husband's young rival. The print used for the Home Vision Cinema VHS version is from the Janus collection. It has been newly remastered. The subtitles are newly translated, by Roman Polanski himself.

Carnage (DVD) Carnage (DVD) » Carnage (DVD)

Delphine Gleize's startling first feature, CARNAGE, adroitly turns random moments into pieces of a tight-fitting puzzle, creating a thick multidimensional plot filled with unexpected parallels and delicately unfolding secrets. The film centers on the connection between a gored bullfighter and a young girl who watches the incident on television. The bull is destroyed, dismembered, and dispersed to markets in Spain, France, and Belgium. While the young girl, Winnie (Raphaelle Molinier), grapples with her understanding of death and personal identity, her parents buy a bull bone for their dog at a gourmet market. The salesclerk, Carlotta (Chiara Mastroianni), is a struggling actor trying to experience rebirth through aquatic exercises and primal screaming. Elsewhere, the university researcher Jacques (Jacques Gamblin), who has retained the eyes of the bull for his studies, finds himself emotionally distanced from his pregnant wife Betty (Lio). His brother, a taxidermist named Luc (Bernard Sens), covets the bull's horns which their mother (Esther Gorintin) gave him as a gift. In CARNAGE, the brave Gleize is on a complex cinematic storytelling mission. The subject matter is at times tragic, but moments of quirky comic relief show the rich contrasts in this discourse of life, love, and survival.DVD Features:Region [unknownKeep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 2.35Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound - French/Italian/SpanishInteractive Features: WeblinksText/Photo Galleries: Filmographies
