Stroszek (DVD) Stroszek (DVD) » Stroszek (DVD)

In Werner Herzog's idiosynchratic and lyrical take on the road movie, the road in question stretches between the gritty, urban slums of Berlin and the equally desolate railroad flats of Wisconsin, U.S.A.
Herzog regular, Bruno S. (Kaspar Hauser in Herzog's THE MYSTERY OF KASPAR HAUSER) plays Stroszek, just out of jail, who is trying to stop drinking and eke out a living by selling fruit and playing music on the street. Stroszek finds a soul mate in Eva (Eva Mattes), an equally hard-up Berlin prostitute. However, the two quickly find their fate closing in on them when Eva's ex-pimps threaten to kill them both. An unlikely solution arises when Stroszek's neighbor, eccentric and aging Scheitz (Clemens Scheitz), takes them along as he heads to rural Wisconsin to meet up with long-lost relatives. When the three displaced Germans arrive in Wisconsin, their lives seem to change for the better, but as the tarnished lures of capitalism fade and the bills pile up, they find themselves locked into the same struggles they fled Berlin to escape. In the process Herzog paints a melancholic and dark portrait of the alien landscapes and the perversely poetic culture of the rural poor in Midwestern America.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic - 1.66Audio: Mono - German Subtitles - English - OptionalAdditional Release Materials: Audio Commentary - 1. Madame Bovary (DVD) Madame Bovary (DVD) » Madame Bovary (DVD)

Claude Chabrol's lifelong interest in the psychological lives of women finds a perfect vehicle in Gustave Flaubert's 1856 novel, MADAME BOVARY. Isabelle Hupert, Chabrol's frequent collaborator and muse, brings a detached and icy intensity to her portrayal of Emma, an ambitious farmer's daughter suffocated by her own life. When Emma meets meek country doctor Charles Bovary (Jean-Francois Balmer), she sees a ticket out of her meager existence. However, the lure of marriage and motherhood is short-lived, and soon Emma senses a new set of ever-encroaching snares and limits preventing her from fulfilling the fanciful destiny she constructs for herself out of her own desires and the romance novels that fuel them. When her outlets of novels and the odd ball at the local chateau cease to satisfy Emma's ravenous hunger for passion and luxury, she takes matters into her own hands, embarking on a double life of domesticity and adultery. Chabrol injects the film with his patented dark humor while remaining faithful to Flaubert's stinging depiction of the narrow world of 19th-century provincial life and its clash with female desires as fleshed out by the tragic figure of Huppert's immensely complicated but very real Emma.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.66Single Side - Dual LayerAudio: Mono 1.0 - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1. Grand Illusion - Criterion Collection (DVD) Grand Illusion - Criterion Collection (DVD) » Grand Illusion - Criterion Collection (DVD)

Calling on his own experiences as an aviator in WWI as well as those of his comrades, Jean Renoir's antiwar masterpiece bids farewell to the class constrictions of European society and calls for the unity of humankind across class and national boundaries. Set in the German prison camps of WWI, the film stars Jean Gabin as Marechal, and Marcel Dalio as Rosenthal. Like the charming aristocrat de Boldieu (Pierre Fresnay), these two French aviators were shot down and now spend most of their time escaping from German prison camps before inevitably being recaptured.
Between escapes, they do what they can to amuse themselves, which includes running a talent show, but after a tunnel they've dug is discovered, the three are sent to Wintersborn, a forbidding fortress of a prison, which is commanded by former ace pilot von Rauffenstein (Erich von Stroheim). The humane commandant practices noblesse oblige toward de Boldieu, hoping for an alliance across national lines. But he comes to learn that this phrase has a different meaning for the Frenchman. One of the great films of all time, GRAND ILLUSION perhaps most purely embodies director Jean Renoir's characterstic humanism, manifested less here in camera technique than an instinctive ability to educe truthful performances from his cast.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseDual-LayerAudio Essay - Peter CowieRare Filmed Introduction by RenoirArchival Radio Presentation: Renoir and Erich von Stroheim accept GRAND ILLUSION'S Best Foreign Film Award at the 1938 New York Film Critics Circle AwardsRe-release Press Book Excerpts: Renoir's LetterTo the Projectionist, Cast Bios, Essay on Renoir by Von Stroheim, Essays About the Film's Title and Recently Recovered Camera Negative
