the Korean BRIDGET JONES

Amply displaying the strong acting, gripping storylines, and well-drawn characters for which K-dramas have become known, the breezily entertaining soap opera is presented in its entirety with this collection of 16 episodes.

In the second part of Sergei Eisenstein's grand film, a grieving Ivan (Nikolai Cherkassov) withdraws from Moscow to his estate at Uglich after the death of the empress, less trustful than ever of those who surround him. His solitude is augmented by the defection of his military chief, Prince Kurbsky (Mikahil Nazvanov), to Poland.
But when the people of Moscow make a mass pilgrimage to petition for his return to Moscow, he realizes that he has an opportunity to increase his power while diminishing that of the boyars. After his former friend Philip the Monk (Andrei Abrikosov) betrays his friendship by siding with the boyars, Ivan unleashes the Oprichniki, a secret police network that he has developed to gather information about his enemies and, when necessary, eliminate them. Under the directon of Ivan's aunt Euphrosyne (Serafima Birman), the boyars hatch a plot to assassinate the czar and put Euphrosyne's mentally defective son, Vladimir (Pavel Kadochnikov), on the throne. But after Ivan deftly eludes death, all of his opponents, including the boyars, the aristocracy, and the Polish army, unite to attempt a final assault on his rule. The visual splendor of Part 2 is enhanced by two scenes featuring Eisenstein's first experiments with color, an element for which he developed an elaborate thematic scheme.DVD Features:Region 0 EncodingKeep Case

Goodbye Dragon Inn (DVD) Goodbye Dragon Inn (DVD) » Goodbye Dragon Inn (DVD)

The subject of cinema, of the mix of loneliness and connection that is part of being in a movie audience, is the concern of this sad, beautiful, minimalist composition by Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-Liang (WHAT TIME IS IT THERE?). The action takes place Inside a Taipei movie theater operated by a lonely clubfooted woman (Shiyang Chi-Chen) whose slow steps echo through the empty corridors and aisles, as if measuring out the feet of celluloid that make up the film itself. When a character actually speaks, the film is half over, and his exclamation that the theater is haunted echoes uneasily through the rest of the film, causing one to wonder just who is a ghost and who isn't. A lonely visitor to the theater (Kiyonobu Mitamura) acts pretty real. But then there are characters who seem to come out of nowhere to sit next to him and bother him with their loud eating. The film on the theater screen is the 1966 King Hu martial arts classic, DRAGON INN, and one of that film's original actors is even in the theater, with his grandson. While not a lot seems to happen, Tsai's film is never dull thanks to the playful sense of sound and stunning cinematography. In chronicling the impermanence of life, and of film itself, this film becomes post-modern as well as beautiful, and---rare for an art film of this sort--accessible and engaging even to the casual movie lover.DVD Features:Region (unknown)Keep CaseWidescreen - 1.85Audio: 5.1 Sound
