For the 2000 SEEN BY... series, in which six directors filmed their vision of the night of December 31, 1999, Hungarian director Ildiko Enyedi offers this tragic love story. Set in a Hungarian coal mining town, Tamas is a shy young miner who falls for Juli, but finds it hard to express his feelings for her. They plan to spend New Year's Eve together, but those plans are thwarted when Tamas is assigned to work that night. Juli, however, takes it upon herself to go to the mine on New Year's Eve to celebrate with Tamas. Shot against the contrasting backdrops of a noisy, dirty, and dangerous coal mine and the eerily peaceful snow covered countryside, TAMAS AND JULI is a beautiful tragedy.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive MenusText/Photo Galleries: Filmographies& AwardsDVD-ROM Features: Weblink

Erika (Isabelle Huppert) teaches classical piano in a cold and often abrasive style. Approaching middle age, she lives with her doting mother (Annie Girardot) and still sleeps in the same bed with her. Erika's social life consists of occasionally sneaking away to a peep show where she secretly comes into contact with perverse passion, often using the discarded trash of previous customers. Her beautiful piano playing seduces youthful Walter (Benoit Magimel), who then takes the instructor's advanced class. Walter reveals his desire during a class session. Erika reacts curiously, presenting a long list of cruel, humiliating sexual acts she would like him to perform on her. Meanwhile, the teacher also torments a talented student (Anna Sigalevitch) who is already plagued by her own fears.Michael Haneke (CODE UNKNOWN) directed this unflinching allegorical tale of cruelty. The film caused a stir at the Cannes Film Festival where it was controversial not only for its subject matter, but also because it won multiple awards there--the Grand Prize and acting awards for both Huppert and Magimel--despite leaving many audience members outraged. Based on a novel by Elfriede Jelinek, the film features numerous classical piano sonatas banged out in an aggressive style.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseLetterboxed - 1.85Additional Release Material: Production Interview - 1. Malena (DVD) Malena (DVD) » Malena (DVD)

With MALENA, Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore spins a romantic coming-of-age yarn about love, loss, and courage. Set in 1941 in a tiny village in Sicily, the film focuses on a group of 13-year-old boys who fall madly in love with Malena (Monica Bellucci), the wife of a local soldier. One of the boys, Renato Amoroso (Giuseppe Sulfaro), a dreamer who yearns for freedom from his war-bound village, revels in the exquisite beauty of the enchanting newcomer. He becomes her shadow, following her through the cobble stone streets and spying on her most intimate moments, overwhelmed with romantic longing for the first time. Malena has a magical spellbinding effect on the male villagers; her presence inspires fantasy and escape from their daily lives. But the women of the village, hardened by war, are quick to judge the nubile outsider. Malena becomes the focus of desire and seething jealousy in the town and she is eventually forced to face the female villagers in a bittersweet climax. Reminiscent of Federico Fellini's nostalgic masterpiece AMARCORD, native Sicilian Tornatore revisits the dusty village streets of his childhood where adolescent boys learn about sex, desire, and ultimately, love. Like Tornatore's critically acclaimed CINEMA PARADISO, he bathes the film in the sun-drenched light of his homeland, giving it a dreamy, earthy sensuality and a poetic spirit. Monica Bellucci is a delicious revelation, the camera lingers seductively on her bewitching beauty. Inspired by the story MA L'AMORE NO... by Luciano Vincenzoni.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 2.35Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound - Italian Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1.
