Definitely not for those who are faint of heart, Renato Polselli's DELIRIUM is a truly shocking piece of 1970s Euro-exploitation cinema. Although the plot makes the film sound like a giallo, DELIRIUM is actually 100 minutes of lunacy that pays lip service to its complex and absurd story. It stars Mickey Hargitay as Dr. Herbert Lyutak, an unhinged sex maniac who brutally abuses his female victims before killing them. Fortunately, his wife is turned on by Lyutak's victims, although her increasingly disturbing visions of medieval torture and lesbian orgies threaten her already tenuous grip on reality. Shocking, darkly comic, and unspeakably sleazy, DELIRIUM is an unforgettable experience. Italian director Gabriele Salvatores (MEDITERRANEO) masterfully directs this eerie and engrossing suspense thriller involving a 10-year-old boy who lives in rural southern Italy. It is summertime and Michele (Guiseppe Cristiano) is free to spend the long sunny days riding his bike and running through the wheat fields. In fact, the wheat could be considered Michele's costar, as it often consumes the entire scope of the screen showing how Michele plays, hides, and ponders life in the vast expanses of flowing yellow stalks. Because there are only a few other children in the village Michele often plays alone, and one day he discovers a hole in the ground, obscured by wheat, where a boy his age is chained and imprisoned. The boy has clearly been starved and mistreated, yet Michele approaches him fearlessly and attempts to make friends with him. With the dreaminess that is a 10-year-old's truest treasure, Michele doesn't ask too many questions, nor does he draw conclusions about why the boy is in the hole, or who put him there. Through the expressions on young Michele's face, viewers can read his light questioning of human existence, human morality, and human rights. However, as the film draws on, subtly revealing shocking secrets about the adults in Michele's village, the beauty of this utterly simple yet deadly powerful plot come clear. Alejandro Gonzalez Iniarritu makes an electrifying directorial debut with AMORES PERROS, an energetic, assured motion picture that jumps off the screen with a seemingly boundless energy. Told in three separate chapters--OCTAVIO AND SUSANA, DANIEL AND VALERIA, and EL CHIVO AND MARU--the film deals with love in the lives of several individuals residing in modern day Mexico City. Octavio (Gael Garcia Bernal) has fallen in love with his brother's wife, Susana (Vanessa Bauche). He begins entering his dog in illegal dogfights in order to save up enough money to run away with her, but eventually learns a powerful lesson when she fails to keep her word. Meanwhile, Daniel (Alvaro Guerrero) has left his wife and daughters for the gorgeous model Valeria (Goya Toledo), but when she is hurt badly in a car accident, the strain on their relationship is stretched to its limits. Finally, El Chivo (Emilio Echevarria) is an ex-revolutionary who has become a paid assassin. Saddened that he has lost all contact with his daughter, he takes one final stand when an intended act of kindness turns brutally tragic.
