In his final collaboration with Akira Kurosawa, Toshiro Mifune portrays Dr. Kyojio Red Beard Niide, a gruff but caring head doctor at a 19th-century clinic for the poor. Sorely in need of competent assistance, Red Beard takes on a new intern, the ambitious Noboru Yasumoto (Yuzo Kayama). However, Yasumoto isn't made aware of his appointment until after he's visited the facility and seen its grim conditions and impoverished patients. Initially, the brash young physician rebels against the wise elder and declines his duties, but gradually Yasumoto begins to respect Red Beard and his difficult yet essential work. As Yasumoto slowly acclimates to the clinic, the story also follows the lives (and deaths) of various patients.Truly the end of an era, RED BEARD marks the dissolution of the Kurosawa/Mifune partnership and also Kurosawa's last black-and-white production. Although surprisingly little has been written about the rift between Mifune and Kurosawa, it's likely that tensions were largely due to the film's grueling two-year shoot. Despite the drama behind the camera, RED BEARD remains one of Kurosawa's underrated classics. Although Mifune is best known for his earlier roles as an impetuous youth, here he gives a mature, though no less vital, performance, echoing the mentor character Takashi Shimura played in STRAY DOG, SEVEN SAMURAI, and other Kurosawa movies. (However, Mifune does get one action-packed, YOJIMBO-worthy fight scene.) In turn, Kayama admirably fills the role of the headstrong young intern. A sort of period-piece MASH or ER, RED BEARD is a moving drama that uses doctors and patients to address the timeless notion of trying to be a good person in an often cruel world.

Valentin (DVD) Valentin (DVD) » Valentin (DVD)

This heart-warmer concerns precocious eight-year-old Valentin (Rodrigo Noya), who lives alone with his grandmother in Buenos Aires in the early 1960s. Longing to be reunited with his absentee mom, Valentin lives with his eccentric grandma (long-time Almodovar star Carmen Maura) and deals with the occasional visits from his reprobate father (director Alejandro Agresti). For solace, Valentin visits a kindly musician (Mex Uritzberea) who urges the boy to hang on to his dream of becoming Argentina's first astronaut. Valentin also develops a bond with Leticia (Juliete Cardinali), one of his dad's young girlfriends. Noya plays his role like a pint-sized blend of Woody Allen, Nanni Moretti, and Audrey Tatou (AMELIE), replete with poignant optimism, wry commentary, and a cupid-like need to play matchmaker for the nicer adults in his life. As engaging as he is, the film gets stolen by the wonderful Cardinali (a TV star in Argentina) who radiates angelic warmth in her too-few scenes. Agresti suffuses the film with well-observed period detail that only hints at the political turmoil of the time (Argentina was in the grip of the infamous reign of terror throughout the'60s and'70s). VALENTIN is one of those films that manages to win a viewer's heart without pulling any harsh reality punches.DVD Features:Region (Unknown)Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Additional Release Material: Interview with Director Alejandro Agresti Trailer - Original Theatrical Trailer

Franco Nero (DJANGO) stars as the title character in this unjustly forgotten spaghetti western from Italian auteur Enzo G. Castellari. Keoma, a half white, half Indian gunfighter, returns to his hometown only to find it overrun by a plague affecting much of the town. Unfortunately, the man running the town, Caldwell, will not let anyone out or any medical supplies in. After saving a beautiful woman (Karlatos) thought to be afflicted, Keoma sets about eradicating Caldwell and his men from his town. Stylish and brutal, director Castellari combines the conventions of the spaghetti western with the slow motion shootouts of Peckinpah, resulting in a wholly unique and entertaining movie.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 2.35:1Audio: Mono - EnglishAdditional Release Materials: Audio Commentary - 1. This release finds two of world cinema's most influential directors trying their hands at cinematic adaptions of the same Maxim Gorky play, THE LOWER DEPTHS. Akira Kurosawa's 1957 version is set during Japan's burgeoning Edo period and stars Toshiru Mifune and Isuzu Yamada, while Jean Renoir's 1936 version was filmed during Hitler's rise to prominence in Germany and stars Jean Gabin and Louis Jouvet. Although each director took liberties with Gorky's story in order to make it fit into their own distinct vision, they both deliver profound, moving works that reconfirm their status as true masters.
