Claude Chabrol's lifelong interest in the psychological lives of women finds a perfect vehicle in Gustave Flaubert's 1856 novel, MADAME BOVARY. Isabelle Hupert, Chabrol's frequent collaborator and muse, brings a detached and icy intensity to her portrayal of Emma, an ambitious farmer's daughter suffocated by her own life. When Emma meets meek country doctor Charles Bovary (Jean-Francois Balmer), she sees a ticket out of her meager existence. However, the lure of marriage and motherhood is short-lived, and soon Emma senses a new set of ever-encroaching snares and limits preventing her from fulfilling the fanciful destiny she constructs for herself out of her own desires and the romance novels that fuel them. When her outlets of novels and the odd ball at the local chateau cease to satisfy Emma's ravenous hunger for passion and luxury, she takes matters into her own hands, embarking on a double life of domesticity and adultery. In 1938, in the midst of the Spanish Civil War, Germany invites a group of Spanish filmmakers to Berlin in order to make two film versions of the hit Andalusian musical production The Girl of Your Dreams, one in German and one in Spanish. The German Minister of Propaganda under Hitler welcomes them with open arms, if only to get in the good graces of Spanish leading lady Macarena Granada (Penelope Cruz). Their situation becomes even more uncomfortable when the only Andalusian-looking extras they can find for their film are the prisoners in a neighboring concentration camp. The life of dancer Ada Falcon was remarkably accomplished, as befits someone who was often referred to as The Empress of Tango. Her glittering achievements saw Ada performing all over the world in the first half of the 20th century, and her star appeared to be in a perpetual state of ascendancy. But 1942 saw a shocking turn of events, as Ada mysteriously vanished from view just as her fame seemed to be peaking. She never returned to the public eye, so in 2002, filmmakers Lorena Munoz and Sergio Wolf decided to retell her tale with this inventive movie about Ada's life. Drawing on vintage footage of the inimitable dancer, and a narrative that draws on the conventions of film noir to tell a dramatic tale, the suspense culminates in an appearance from Ada herself, who finally offers her side of the story. An anomalous slice of filmmaking that strives for originality throughout, I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR EYES HAVE DONE TO ME is an engrossing study of an elusive figure in the history of the dance world.
