A comedy with some very meaningful undertones set in the upper-class echelons of Mexico's well-to-do, SEX, SHAME AND TEARS is a mannered portrayal of two couples whose financial success has not made up for the dissatisfaction of their personal lives. Carlos and Ana have lamentably divergent tastes, his toward the New Age-y and the spiritual, while she pursues the pleasures of the flesh. These differences come to a head when Tomas comes for a visit; as Ana's former lover, he represents everything Carlos lacks for her. These circumstances are mirrored across the street in Andrea and Miguel; Andrea's husband is an ardent lover, though unfortunately not with her, and matters are further complicated when Miguel's former lover Maria comes to stay with them after a recent divorce. SOLARIS, director Andrei Tarkovsky's science fiction cult classic, presents an uncompromisingly unique and poetic meditation on space travel and its physical and existential ramifications. When a long-standing Russian space station hovering above the planet Solaris begins to report strange phenomena, Kris Kelvin (Donatas Banionis), an eager and intrepid cosmonaut, departs for the station in order to investigate. Warned by former Solaris specialists that the planet presents incomprehensible obstacles, Kelvin is nevertheless secure in his mission. However, the minute he steps foot onto the haunted and desolate space station, everything changes. Kelvin learns that of the three members left on board, one has killed himself and the remaining two have seemingly become schizophrenic recluses. When Kelvin's dead ex-wife appears out of the shadows, the reports that Solaris is a thinking being capable of reading human minds and materializing their desires and memories are proven true. As Kelvin joins the rest of the crew in a seemingly life-or-death struggle to understand this phenomena, Tarkovsky crafts a mind-altering earthbound space odyssey. In a film set in a grim, futuristic dystopia, director Shinji Aoyama (HELPLESS, TWO PUNKS) issues a philosophical rumination on the meaning of love in the face of death and fundamental solitude. Detective Saga (Ishibashi Ryo) is shot while working as a bodyguard, and his gun is stolen from him, only to be later used as the murder weapon in a spate of brutal killings. Terminally-ill genius Shimano (Suzuki Kazuma) is behind the violence, and his nihilism fuels destruction at every turn. The two men`s paths mirror one another, as workaholic Saga is deserted by his wife, and searches for the meaning in relationships, while Shimano is out to show that love is proven only in death. Aoyama openly references Kurasawa`s STRAY DOG, but turns in a much darker portrait of the human condition, while Ryo Ishibashi (THE GRUDGE) gives a characteristically topnotch performance.
