In 1973, on the Jewish high holy day of Yom Kippur, the Arab nations launched a massive military assault on the state of Israel. KIPPUR follows the paths of two Israeli soldiers as they face the chaos and carnage of battle. Weinraub (Leron Levo) is a sensitive, artistic sort. He quotes Herbert Marcuse to his friend, Ruso (Tomer Ruso), who is much more gung-ho, as they head off to battle. In the pandemonium at the front, the two fail to find their unit, and end up joining an airborne rescue unit. Amos Gitai avoids all sentimentality and sensation. He doesn't dwell on the politics of the war. His focus is on the men who experience the ugliness and tedium of battle and the effect this experience has on them. As the film gets deep down in the mud, literally, with these soldiers, we get a close-up look at the aftermath of the violence. These are stoic men, who never question the necessity of what they do. The actors deliver straightforward performances that enhance the realistic power of the film. Domenico (Sandro Panseri) has migrated from his tiny Italian village to Milan. BAD COMPANY (MAUVAISES FREQUENTATIONS) is a tough-as-nails coming of age story from director Jean-Pierre Ameris. Delphine (Maud Forget) is a pretty brunette with a sweet, shy, cooperative disposition. When she returns to high school after summer vacation, a new girl named Olivia (Lou Doillon) has joined her class. Olivia is tall and sexy with long dreadlocks and a bold, bohemian fashion sense. The girls are instantly drawn to each other and Olivia begins taking Delphine to parties to meet guys. Much more experienced than wide-eyed Delphine, Olivia has had multiple sexual partners and encourages Delphine to find out what it's all about. Delphine instantly falls in love with Laurent (Robinson Stevenin) who is ragged, emotionally charged, and needy. He tries to manipulate Delphine and constantly tests her limits, but she stands her ground and commits herself to loving him unconditionally. Once he realizes this, and sees the power he has over her, he coerces Delphine--and Olivia--into prostituting themselves in order to buy him a plane ticket to Jamaica. What follows is an intense, emotional, sickening journey made entirely compelling by Forget's breathtaking performance and piercingly sincere blue eyes. Filiberto (Gerardo Tarcena) has been working in the United States for three years. Now, he returns across the border to his home in Mexico and attempts to raise awareness of the struggle that the migrant workers in the United States must endure. Speaking out only brings Filiberto more rejection and further alienates him. This social tragedy of the working classes uses Filiberto as a symbol of many disenfranchised, exploited workers who face difficulties from employers every day.

In MARGARETTE`S FEAST, Brazilian director Renato Falcco pairs the poverty that runs rife throughout his native country with a delirious does of fantasy. Shot in black-and-white and with no dialogue, Falcco`s film is set to a pulsating musical score, and embodies many of the social and political struggles the Brazilian people face. The simple plot follows Pedro (Hique Gomez), a man caught in a never-ending cycle of poverty. One day, Pedro discovers a suitcase full of money, and realizes that no matter how much he spends, the suitcase magically refills itself with cash. Thinking that money will solve all his problems, Pedro learns a few sharp lessons in life as his worries only seem to multiply, but not before he stages a huge feast for his wife, Margarette.
