In SATYRICON, Italian New Wave director Federico Fellini depicts the hedonistic, amoral, pre-Christian world of ancient Rome. Using the unfinished classical writings of Petronius as his guide, Fellini invents a dreamlike culture full of strange, distant characters and odd, grotesque events. Though the film lacks a definitive plot or narrative structure, its constants are Gitone (Max Born) and Encolpius (Martin Potter), whose unsavory encounters with sex, the theater, and religion are the film's focal point. Presenting a loosely structured episodic tale of decadence and depravity in ancient Rome, SATYRICON follows the adventures of two students as they negotiate their way through a variety of mishaps, dangers, and sexual encounters. What results is a bizarre journey through ancient Rome. In the tradition of French cross-dressing comedies like LA CAGE AUX FOLLES comes MY WIFE MAURICE (MA FEMME...S'APPELLE MAURICE). Director Jean-Marie Poire (who also made the French comedy THE VISITORS) brings to the film a frantic comedic pace, colorful visuals, and sense of the absurd that has been compared to early Almodovar. When a philanderer's spurned mistress follows him back to Paris to confront him and his wife, the womanizer panics. Room 407 of Motel Cactus is home to all of the action in this moody, dark depiction of disconnection by first-time Korean director Ki-Yong Park. In four loosely-connected vignettes, the characters` unhappiness is expressed in a myriad of ways, with cinematographer Christopher Doyle (HERO, IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE) creating a palpably oppressive, claustrophobic feel. The first encounter occurs on a young woman`s birthday, which she celebrates in the hotel with her boyfriend, where their relationship deteriorates rapidly. Next, a student has rented the room in order to shoot a short film for his class, but while waiting for the cameraman to show up, he and the actress become physically intimate. An older couple meets in a bar and repair to 407 for drunken, wild sex, only to greet a melancholy morning, while a pair of lovers discover that their much-longed-for reunion works better as fantasy than reality. Every stage of romantic, heterosexual relationships is represented in this bleakly human tale of love, loss, and alienation in a seedy love motel in Seoul.
