French New Wave master Jean-Luc Godard continues his fascination with dime store novels and American crime films with 1964's BAND OF OUTSIDERS, a free-spirited romp in the same vein as the director's breakthrough smash, BREATHLESS. More traditional than BREATHLESS in its technical execution, BAND OF OUTSIDERS sparkles with freshness and originality--it uses comical, poetic narration by Godard himself, and has a bouncy musical score by Michel Legrand. The performances from Claude Brasseur, Sami Frey, and especially Anna Karina combine satirical melodrama, overflowing hipness, and moving sincerity, giving the film plenty of heart. Odile is a sensitive young woman who, out of fear and guilt, opposes their plan, but Arthur and Franz coax her to go along with the idea. In a loosely structured series of dreams, sexual fantasies, memories, premonitions, and surreal images, director Istvan Szabo enters the minds of the residents of a Budapest apartment building set for destruction. 25 FIREMAN'S STREET is a creatively ambitious attempt to do nothing less than provide a visually emotive history of Hungary from the rule of the Hapsburgs to the aftermath of the Russian invasion in 1956. Each character--including a woman whose husband is dying, a young man who loves two women, and a soldier who fears he'll die in the war--is given a different cinematic feel, tied together by the absurdist dramatic influence of Eugene Ionesco, another Hungarian storyteller.Unlike Dusan Makavejev in Yugoslavia, whose films such as WR: MYSTERIES OF THE ORGANISM also deal with life under communism through the use of surreal fantasy, Szabo has the unique ability to connect character and personality to dreamy sequences that might otherwise become meaninglessly ethereal. This is not history writ large with great battle scenes and thousands of extras; rather it is an attempt to elucidate that picture not by telling a lot of individual stories in the historical sense but by going within those stories to show people's unfulfilled hopes, nightmares, and memories. Andre Techine's BAROCCO takes place during a local election in Amsterdam, where a small-time boxer named Samson (Gerard Depardieu) is paid to create a scandal by saying he had a homosexual affair with one of the candidates. Although Samson is reluctant at first to get involved, his lover, Laure (Isabelle Adjani), persuades him to agree and use the money to escape the city. However, after Samson takes a large sum of money from one candidate, he accepts an equal amount from another. When the situation blows up in his face, Samson is murdered by his double, a gangster, and chaos ensues. When Raoul's wife, Solange, falls into a state of perpetual despondency, he tries anything to cure her -- including asking a total stranger to make love to her. But even with a new lover, her sadness remains. The two men are utterly baffled, until a neighbor offers an invaluable insight: might Solange want a baby? It turns out that she does, but after numerous attempts, neither husband nor lover succeeds in impregnating her. Then, one afternoon, the three head off on a field trip and Solange meets Christian, a precocious 13-year-old whiz kid who manages to get her into bed. Finally, with this boy, Solange finds contentment. But Christian's horrified parents immediately attempt to ship him off to boarding school.
