Agnieszka Holland's EUROPA EUROPA is the fascinating fact-based story of Solomon Perel (Marco Hofschneider), a German Jew who survived the Holocaust by concealing his identity, literally within enemy ranks. When Nazi thugs smash into the Perels' house, 13-year-old Solly manages to flee. Upon his reunion with his family, they head for Poland, hoping to find safety but war soon overcomes that land, and once again Solly is forced to run, this time with his brother. They become separated, however, and ultimately Solly falls into the clutches of the Nazis. He quickly realizes he has just two chances for survival: convincing them that he, too, is a pure-blooded Aryan, and hoping that they never find out the truth. Based on Perel's miraculous autobiography, Holland's film is an epic drama that features a moving performance by Hofschneider. Holland uses exquisite pacing to build even greater tension; the further Solly digs himself in with the Nazis, the closer to being exposed he becomes. Greek director Michael Cacoyannis brings Euripedes' classic tragedy to the screen with great liberties. Taking off from the murder of Agamemnon, this version of the tragedy sticks to the basic story of Elektra marrying and the ensuing double murder. Yet, Cacoyannis has stripped away much of the original dialogue in favor of stark cinematography and silent stretches. Banned in Russia for over a decade for its blasphemous portrayal of Nicholas II, Elem Klimov`s (COME AND SEE) intense drama brings to life the controversial figure of the
mad monk
who wielded a legendary power over the royal family. Klimov`s portrayal is indeed an indictment of the ruling class, depicting the Czar (Anatoli Romashin) as an ineffectual ruler blindly led by the charismatic, power-hungry Grigory Rasputin (Aleksei Petrenko), while the politically decrepit aristocracy degenerated into decadence and hedonism. Arriving at court with a strange healing power that many attributed to hypnotism, Rasputin was the only person capable of treating the Tsar`s young heir, stopping his uncontrollable bleeding later recognized as hemophilia. Once his place in the palace was secure, however, the monk embarked upon a downward spiral of sexual vice, drunkenness, and violence that made him many enemies among society`s upper echelons. Eventually deciding that Rasputin`s power threatened the security of Russia`s monarchy, a group of noblemen plotted a demise that would enter history as one of the most fabled murders of all time. Petrenko`s performance is nothing less than spectacular, channeling the spirit of Rasputin in a chillingly apt depiction of insanity.
