Italian director Luchino Visconti delivers one of his most ambitious works with this sprawling historical drama. Based on the acclaimed novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, THE LEOPARD is set in Sicily during the 1800s, as the aristocracy found itself being suffocated by a newly democratic fervor. Prince Don Fabrizio Salina (Burt Lancaster) tries to hold on to the past, but it appears that his glory days are waning. This is perfectly exemplified by his nephew Tancredi Falconeri (Alain Delon) and his gorgeous wife-to-be Angelica (Claudia Cardinale). As the revolt gathers steam and begins to affect a real change, the aging prince must come to terms with the new world that surrounds him. With THE LEOPARD, Visconti confirms his status as one of Europe's most masterful directors.DVD Features:Region 13-Disc SetKeep CaseSingle Side - Dual LayerWidescreen - 2.35Audio: Mono - ItalianAdditional Release Material: New Transfer of the 161-Minute American Release w/ English Language Dialogue Audio Commentary - 1. Groundbreaking Japanese New Wave director Yasuko Masumura is at his finest and most original with this satirical critique of the corporate culture in postwar Japan. When the competition between 3 rival candy companies becomes cutthroat, World Caramels find a poor girl with horribly bad teeth as their new spokesperson. When she becomes an overnight star, she ends up becoming more ruthless and underhanded that even the top executives. Masumara paints a disturbing yet visually stunning world of animal instincts, backstabbing, and greed that is also laced with humor and biting wit.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 2.35Audio: Dolby Digital Mono - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Original Theatrical TrailerText/Photo Galleries: Filmographies - 1. The Man Without a Past (DVD) The Man Without a Past (DVD) » The Man Without a Past (DVD)

An unidentified man gets severely beaten by a trio of thugs and ends up in the hospital, where he dies--but suddenly reawakens without knowing who he is. He wanders into a small, poverty-stricken community where families live in small containers and a night out means dinner at the Salvation Army. It is there that M meets Irma, another poor soul looking for a better life--and maybe love. Aki Kaurismaki's THE MAN WITHOUT A PAST begins with horrible violence, but after that it becomes a longing, beautiful study of love and loneliness, of pain and poverty, of faith and fragility. Markku Peltola stars as the amnesiac known only as M; Kati Outinen plays Irma with great care and tenderness for which she won the Best Actress Award at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. Finnish writer-director-producer Kaurismaki's film won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes; it is wonderfully satiric, sweet and innocent, and brutally honest, following in the footsteps of such other Kaurismaki triumphs as JUHA and THE MATCH FACTORY GIRL.This film screened in October 2002 as part of the 40th New York Film Festival organized by The Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York City.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreen - 1.85Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - English

The Return (DVD) The Return (DVD) » The Return (DVD)

Director Andrei Zvyagintsev makes a phenomenally assured directorial debut with THE RETURN. The spare tale focuses on two young brothers, Andrey (Vladimir Garin) and Vanya (Ivan Dobronravov), whose lives are thrown into a tailspin when their father (Konstantin Lavroneko) returns after a 12-year absence. Bullish and intense, the patriarch takes the boys on a mysterious journey through a bleak yet beautiful Russian landscape. While Andrey looks up to his father, Vanya has trouble forgiving him for disappearing so many years ago. This strain adds even more drama to the already tense atmosphere, culminating in a shocking event that will change their lives forever.Winner of the Golden Lion at the 2003 Venice Film Festival, THE RETURN is a masterful drama that works on an allegorical, as well as literal, level. Zvyaginstev's imagery is at once painterly, abstract, and realistic. Newcomers Garin and Dobronravov deliver performances that are deeply affecting. In a cruel twist of irony, actor Garin drowned just after shooting in the same water where the opening scene took place, which adds another level of bleakness to the film's somber tone. THE RETURN is a truly haunting work of art.DVD Features:Region (Unknown)Keep CaseWidescreen - 1.85
