The title means discontented boredom in French, and it is the peculiar ailment of Martin, a very unhappy philosophy professor. When he picks up the tab at a bar for a poor artist and receives a painting for his troubles, it leads to a relationship with one of the artist's models -- a 17 year old beauty named Cecilia. Soon, the two are engaging in daily rendezvous that quickly become an obsession for Martin, who has realized that Cecilia is something of a blank slate -- she shows no emotion during their wryly explicit lovemaking and Martin begins to think her soulless. Modern sensibilities clash with ancient customs in this poetic, emotional film from acclaimed Iranian director Dariush Mehrjui. Newlyweds Reza and Leila--wealthy, young, deeply in love--face a crisis when Leila is diagnosed as infertile. The couple agrees that they don't need children, but Leila is still burdened with feelings of inadequacy, which are compounded by her mother-in-law's unrelenting demands for a child. This is a jaw-droppingly bizarre movie from Korea that mixes scenes of gruesome torture and violence with comedy and heartbreaking profundity. Perhaps as a result of too many amphetamines and violent incidents in his past, beekeeper Lee Byeong Gu (Sin Ha-Gyun) has become convinced that an unscrupulous business tycoon (Kan Man-Shik) is actually an alien from the planet Andromeda. Lee's frumpy acrobat girlfriend (Hwang Jung-Min) helps him abduct the alien and torture him into confessing. Meanwhile, a hangdog detective is following a trail leading to Lee's hideout high in the mountains.Let the timid be warned: this is not the antipollution comedy that the title might indicate. Man's inhumanity to man is certainly depicted--as in events like Korea's 1980 Kwangju riots--but there's more going on here than any one summation could describe: bees attack, a pet dog named Earth dines on human remains, alternate theories of evolution are posited (i.e. Noah's Ark was a deep submarine carrying DNA samples); an entire lifetime of films, political turmoil, anime and manga are boiled down and distilled into one profound, multi-textual allegory. Adventurous viewers will be in for one hell of a ride, as this film dares go where few have gone before, yet it does so with heart and intellect to match its wicked humor and headlong momentum.

In Werner Herzog's idiosynchratic and lyrical take on the road movie, the road in question stretches between the gritty, urban slums of Berlin and the equally desolate railroad flats of Wisconsin, U.S.A.
Herzog regular, Bruno S. (Kaspar Hauser in Herzog's THE MYSTERY OF KASPAR HAUSER) plays Stroszek, just out of jail, who is trying to stop drinking and eke out a living by selling fruit and playing music on the street. Stroszek finds a soul mate in Eva (Eva Mattes), an equally hard-up Berlin prostitute. However, the two quickly find their fate closing in on them when Eva's ex-pimps threaten to kill them both. An unlikely solution arises when Stroszek's neighbor, eccentric and aging Scheitz (Clemens Scheitz), takes them along as he heads to rural Wisconsin to meet up with long-lost relatives. When the three displaced Germans arrive in Wisconsin, their lives seem to change for the better, but as the tarnished lures of capitalism fade and the bills pile up, they find themselves locked into the same struggles they fled Berlin to escape.
