30-something Durval lives with his mother in the back of the record store that they own. Unstylish and socially awkward, he tries to score points with the girl in the store next door, but doesn't get far. When their house begins to look unkempt, Durval urges his mother to hire a maid, and soon a beautiful girl named Celia shows up to take the low-paying job. A few days later, Celia disappears, leaving behind a little girl and a note, asking that Durval and his mother care for her. Celia never returns and Durval slowly grows attached to the little girl. When he and his mother discover her identity on the news, however, their world is turned upside down. A dramatic Chinese thriller with the feel of Hollywood film noir, SO CLOSE TO PARADISE follows two friends heading in opposite directions. One settles in a manual labor job on the docks. The other wants more and begins running with an organized crime unit. The gangster falls for a lounge singer he has kidnapped and finds himself in trouble without the aide of his companion at his side. This film was banned for three years by the Chinese government for its depiction of mainland corruption.

Like the protagonist of LATE MARRIAGE, writer-director Dover Kosashvili was born in Georgia (of the former USSR) and raised in Israel. Kosashvili's provocative debut feature is a very funny, but sometimes painful account of one man's late journey of self-discovery. Zaza (Lior Loui Ashkenazi) is thirty-one years old, and his parents, Yasha (Moni Moshonov) and Lily (the director's own mother, Lili Kosashvili), are supporting him while he attends grad school. They believe in the traditions of the old country, and they are distraught and embarrassed because their only son is not married. After many abortive attempts to arrange a marriage for him, they discover that Zaza is having a torrid affair with Judith (Ronit Elkabetz). Zaza's parents won't let him marry Judith because she's older than Zaza, she's divorced, and she has a nine-year-old daughter, Madona (Sapir Kugman). It's a familiar story, but Kosashvili eschews easy laughs, stereotypes, and cliches in favor of subtly performed, well-observed family drama. The frank presentation of Zaza and Judith's relationship gives LATE MARRIAGE an erotic charge.
