Set in Sweden, Andrei Tarkovsky's last film follows the travails of wealthy patriarch Alexander (Erland Josephson), a former actor and critic who lives in a remote home on the edge of the Baltic Sea. One year on his birthday, a sudden television announcement interrupts the celebration with news of a nuclear holocaust. His family and guests suffer through violent fits of hysteria and emotional turmoil in the ensuing days, but the previously troubled Alexander finds a clearness of mind when he makes a pact with God--offering himself as a sacrifice in order to redeem the fallen earth for his cherished son. Supremely poetic, THE SACRIFICE is filled with achingly beautiful images, expertly shot by Ingmar Bergman's trusted cinematographer Sven Nykvist. As Alexander goes from self-contented ease to crippling animal fear and existential anguish and finally to spiritual abandon, the troubled journey is illustrated with a haunting succession of images, tableaus, objects, dreams, and gestures--all sewn together in a seamlessly elliptical vision. As in all of Tarkovsky's haunting and mystical films, the characters are forced to come to terms with their own physical and spiritual existence, with redemption coming through faith--in this case, Alexander's faith in his love for his young son.DVD Features:Region 1 EncodingSnap CaseDocumentary: DIRECTED BY ANDREI TARKOVSKY - A Film by Michal Leszcylowski

ROSAS BLANCAS PARA MI HERMANA NEGRA is a vintage slice of melodrama from Mexico`s golden age of cinema. Directed by Abel Salazar, the film centers around a racist singer named Laura (Libertad Lamarque), who nonetheless shares a lifelong friendship with a black woman, Angustias (Eusebia Cosme). When Laura`s daughter falls in love with Angustias`s son, the relationship brings long-simmering emotions to a boiling point that triggers a series of tragic, but ultimately cathartic, events. Following in the tradition of Douglas Sirk`s IMITATION OF LIFE, the Mexican classic is presented in Spanish without subtitles.

Smiles of a Summer Night - Criterion Collection (DVD) Smiles of a Summer Night - Criterion Collection (DVD) » Smiles of a Summer Night - Criterion Collection (DVD)

SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT is an enchanting comedy of manners with a satirical edge. Set on a country estate at the turn of the century, it features eight people, including an actress, a sophisticated aristocratic couple, a lawyer and his virginal wife, and a spirited young maid who, during the course of one evening, change partners several times and engage in multiple romantic trysts. Full of subtle eroticism and wit, Ingmar Bergman's romance proposes that falling in love (or lust) beyond the parameters of social convention is not only unavoidable at times but it might even be the key to personal happiness.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseSingle Side - Dual LayerFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Mono - SwedishAdditional Release Material: Video Introduction by Director Ingmar Bergman Video Conversation With Film Historian Peter Cowie and Producer Jorn Donner Trailers - 1. The Passion of Anna (DVD) The Passion of Anna (DVD) » The Passion of Anna (DVD)

Shot in striking, diffused color by master cinematographer Sven Nykvist, THE PASSION OF ANNA is one of several Ingmar Bergman films of the 1960s dealing with a limited number of characters in an isolated setting--filming took place on the remote island of Faro, where Bergman was living at the time--whose emotional and psychological imbalances eventually lead to a crisis. Max von Sydow plays Andreas, a loner who (after an initial chance encounter) becomes acquainted with the crippled widow Anna (Liv Ullmann) through their mutual friends Eva and Elis Vergerus (played by Bibi Andersson and Erland Josephson), a troubled married couple. Andreas and Anna embark on a love affair but are soon confronted with disturbing revelations about each other's pasts. Their relationship suffers irreparable damage through mutual deception, insecurities, and violent outbreaks. Meanwhile, the atmosphere of malaise and menace surrounding the characters is heightened by the presence of an unknown perpetrator on the sparsely populated island who has been brutally torturing and killing farm animals. Bergman and Nykvist's technical mastery is evident throughout the film, especially in the closing shot, which has been referred to as one of the most extraordinary and innovative in modern cinema.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreen - 1.66Audio: Mono - Swedish Mono - SpanishAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. Betty Fisher and Other Stories (DVD) Betty Fisher and Other Stories (DVD) » Betty Fisher and Other Stories (DVD)

Director Claude Miller was a protege of Francois Truffaut, and the French master's influence is clear in this low-key thriller, based on the novel THE TREE OF HANDS by Ruth Rendell. Betty (Sandrine Kiberlain), a reclusive best-selling author and mother of a young son, is having a hard enough time dealing with a visit from her eccentric and self-involved mother, Margot (Nicole Garcia), who suffers from a blood disorder that occasionally makes her violent. Betty has the scars from her childhood to prove it. When Betty's son is suddenly and tragically killed, Margot doesn't seem very sympathetic. This story is intertwined with the story of Carole (Mathilde Seigner of WITH A FRIEND LIKE HARRY), the neglectful and abusive mother of Jose (Alexis Chatrian), who is about the same age as Betty's son. When Margot, in a deranged effort to help her daughter, kidnaps Jose, Carole's good-natured African boyfriend, Francois (Luck Mervil) is a prime suspect, and goes looking for the real kidnapper to clear his name. Miller deftly weaves an engaging and suspenseful tale in which characters of different classes and cultures pass through each other's lives. While some of them behave atrociously, Miller never forgets their essential humanity.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseLetterboxed - 1.66Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Making-of TrailersInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive Menus
