In an effort to counterbalance the dark and heavy mood that has infested Eastern European cinema after the breakup of Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, writer-director Srdjan Karanovic made LOVING GLANCES (SJAJ U OCIMA), a romantic comedy that examines the troubled region with feelings of hope rather then despair. Labud (Senad Alihodzic) is an ethnic refugee in search of his old girlfriend when he meets and falls in love with Romana, even though the recent war had made their ethnic groups mortal enemies. LOVING GLANCES explores the Yugoslav society after the collapse of the country, but does not dwell excessively on the war, choosing rather to focus on the way such turmoil affected regular people trying to go about their lives. The life of a man recovering from a stint in an asylum forms the focus for this moving feature film from Iranian director Mehdi Fakhim-Zadeh. After recovering from a severe mental illness, Behrouz is released and attempts to pull the meagre threads of his life back together. He meets a woman, Shirin, and falls in love with her. The two marry on a whim, and decide to take a devil-may-care attitude to life which sees them spinning off on numerous adventures. A heartwarming story unfolds, illustrating that sometimes life can shine kindly on those who have suffered grave misfortune.
