THE SHOE, a Latvian film from 1998, is a uniquely bleak take on the classic fairytale CINDERELLA. The Latvian coast is closely patrolled by Russian guards who are looking for people who may attempt to swim to the Soviet Union. One day, a group of soldiers find a woman`s shoe in the sand, and trace the footsteps leading up to it to a nearby village. Once there, the men undertake an exhaustive search of the female villagers, asking each one to try on the shoe to see who it fits. But that`s where the similarities with CINDERELLA end, for once they find the perfect match, the woman in question will be in dire trouble, leading to some darkly comic moments as the film winds to its conclusion.

Julie Lopes-Curval's debut film is a lushly photographed and mature work. Set over the course of a year in Cayeux, a once-luxurious coastal town in Northern France, SEASIDE follows the lives of a group of residents who are struggling to find happiness. Rose (Bulle Ogier) is a compulsive gambler and mother of Paul (Jonathan Zaccai), who lives with the beautiful, but unhappy, Marie (Helene Fillieres). Across town, Albert (Patrick Lizana), finds himself becoming disillusioned with his marriage.
