After years of working successfully in commercials and music videos, French directors Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet make a splashing feature-film debut, DELICATESSEN, a hysterical exercise in style. Scripted by comic book writer and frequent Caro and Jeunet collaborator Gilles Adrien, the story follows a sweet-natured clown, Louison (Dominique Pinon), who moves into a run down apartment building with a delicatessen on the ground floor and falls in love with the butcher`s daughter, Julie Clapet (Marie-Laure Dougnac). When it turns out that Julie`s father (Jean-Claude Dreyfus) is actually butchering human beings and selling the meat to the carnivorous tenants of the building, Julie must decide if she will remain loyal to her father`s business or expose the truth in order to save Louison from being the next victim. Taking place entirely inside, underneath, and on the roof of the delicatessen, the film uses an old pipe that runs throughout the building as a channel of communication for its characters.Caro and Jeunet have a flair for visual communication and comedy that overflows in DELICATESSEN, keeping viewers engaged in the film even when the style seems to swallow the plot. In one of the most mimicked scenes of the 1990s (most notably in commercials), the directors brilliantly choreograph a bizarre event in which the separate activities of each of the hotel`s tenants--a couple making love in a squeaky bed, a man painting his ceiling, a woman playing the cello--become hilariously rhythmic and synchronized. This scene spawned an entirely new cinematic language, making DELICATESSEN one of the most auspicious directorial debuts of the `90s.

Set in early 1990s Kazakhstan, the film centers on Mustafa (Nussuppaev), a 14-year-old who is nicknamed Schizo because of a mental handicap that makes him a little different from other kids. Schizo lives with his mother (Gulmara Jeralieva) and her lowlife boyfriend, Sakura (Eduard Tabyschev), who uses Schizo to lure men to fight in a dangerous bare-knuckle gambling ring. Just as one fighter is about to die, he asks Schizo to give the little money that he earned to his wife and son; in doing so, Schizo begins an unusual relationship with Zina (the captivating Olga Landina) and her young boy, Sanzhik (the charming Kanagat Nurtai), who are living a meager existence in a shack at the far end of the remote village. When Schizo brings in a crazy uncle who actually wins an important bout, Sakura gets in deep trouble and decides to use Schizo to get out of it.Beautifully photographed on location in Almaty, Kazakhstan, by Khasanbek Kydryaliyev, SCHIZO (also known as FIFTY-FIFTY) is a wonderful, unique cinematic experience, a deeply moving, sweetly involving, and subtly powerful portrait of an extraordinary teenager searching for family and his place in the world. Omarova was named Best Female Director at the Copenhagen International Film Festival for this gem of a movie.

Based on a novel by Claude Klotz (MAN ON THE TRAIN), KILLER KID is a brutal exploration of the violence that adults inflict on children. Djilali (Teufik Jallab) is an 11-year-old Lebanese orphan recruited by a terrorist group to become a ruthless child assassin. Sent to Paris on a mission to assassinate the French President, Djilali enlists an unsuspecting Arab boy named Karim (Younesse Boudache) to help him blend into French society. Karim has grown up in a poor Parisian suburb and knows nothing of the indoctrinated fanaticism that informs Djilali's life--he is a carefree boy who loves rap music, skateboarding, cheeseburgers, and girls. Despite their cultural differences, the boys forge a genuine friendship, one that is soon tested by Djilali's conflicted duty to his terrorist mission.
