This dark drama explores a true tale set in 1850 on the isolated French-Canadian island of St. Pierre. Yugoslav director Emir Kustirica makes a fabulous acting debut as Neele August, an illiterate fisherman who brutally murders his ex-fishing captain in a night of drunken revelry. Sentenced to death, August cannot be killed until the remote island Governor imports a used guillotine from the French government. While awaiting the arrival of the widow, August is placed under the care of the reticent, iconoclastic Captain Jean (Daniel Auteuil) and his freethinking wife Pauline (Juliette Binoche). Under Pauline's direction, August becomes a devoted social servant whose heroic deeds place the island's female population solidly against his death sentence. The film's costuming and art direction are accomplished, setting the stage for Eduardo Serra's gorgeous landscape cinematography, at its best amongst the dreary seasonal changes of the remote island. Low angles, hand-held camerawork, and consistently foggy skies create a seasick feeling as director Patrice Leconte's pained attention to Jean's horse and the society surrounding the main characters elevates the film from a tidy chamber drama into a visually engaging philosophical discourse.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary- 1. Set in 1940s France in the moments before the German occupation of Paris during World War II, Jean-Paul Rappeneau's lively farce BON VOYAGE combines a murder mystery, a political drama, and a series of madcap subplots including a secret scientific discovery and a gathering of socialites at Bordeaux's Hotel Splendide. The result is a picturesque period piece full of energy, adventure, and breathtaking scenery. Dynamic performances from an all-star cast that includes Gerard Depardieu, Isabelle Adjani, and Gregori Derangere complete this delightfully pert film.Forced to flee Paris as the Germans advance, a mismatched group of oddly acquainted personalities reassemble in Bordeaux. Viviane (Adjani) is a stunning film actress whose talents are used both on-screen and off. She swiftly seduces the French prime minister, Beaufort (Depardieu), on the eve of WWII--a convenient catch in wartime. However, her former flame Frederic (Derangere), who Viviane neatly framed and sent to prison for a murder she committed, is now free and is still pursuing her. Frederic's jailbreak buddy Raoul (Yvan Attal), is also in tow, with nothing but trouble up his sleeve. Meanwhile, a pretty physics student, Camille (Virginie Ledoyen) tempts the hearts of both ex-cons, while protecting her professor and their scientific discovery, which must not fall into German hands. Waiting on the wings is the suspicious journalist Winckler (Peter Coyote), whose sneaky demeanor is only matched by Thierry (Nicolas Vaude), the revenge-crazed nephew of the man Viviane murdered.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital Stereo - French
