The third in director Takashi Miike's (AUDITION, ICHI THE KILLER) Black Society Trilogy, which examines the effects of other far eastern countries on Japan, LEY LINES paints a dystopic, hostile picture of Japan and its inhabitants. Bored of their suburban existence, three young Chinese-born men journey to Tokyo and become enmeshed in a web of crime and violence from which none will emerge unscathed. After taking up drug pushing and getting robbed by a desperate prostitute, the three have a run-in with a Chinese warlord who sets out to kill them; after one of them is shot, the other two return to their village, where another is run down by a truck driver on a rampage. That leaves only one of the boys, who eventually joins forces with the prostitute, Anita, for a final face-off with Wu, the gang leader. Born into poverty in Mexico in 1932, Javier Solas supported his family from a young age though boxing and as a singing butcher. At 16, he began singing full time, which led to a successful recording career in 1950. Beginning in 1957, he starred in 20 films, singing in his own inimitable style. He died in 1966 at the age of 33. Kei Mizutani, the goddess of Japanese exploitation films, stars in this futuristic thriller as the killer sex-droid Terminatrix. In this perverse future, humanity has allowed its own creation, a race of lusty female androids, to wrest control of the universe from them. However, Ms. Mizutani's sex-droid, the Terminatrix, has begun a war against these soulless sex-bots, one that will not end until her need for vengeance has been satisfied. A car crash causes the random intersection of various lives in this Austrian film by Barbara Albert. Manu (Kathrin Resetarits) survives a plane crash only to die eight years later on impact with a carload of teenagers. She leaves behind a spooky little daughter Yvonne (Deborah Ten Brink), a grieving husband (Georg Friedrich) who was having an affair with her best friend (Ursula Strauss), her neurotic younger sister (Marion Mitterhammer), a live-in whore for a one-legged old man, and her brother Reini (Martin Brambach)--a physics professor who ties it all together with lectures on fractals and chaos theory. Reini also bonds over fast food with the painfully shy daughter of a lovelorn hausfrau (Gabriela Schmoll). The best moments come from Desiree Oureda as the outcast, Ouija-board wielding schoolgirl who develops a bond with the boy whose bad driving made a quadriplegic of his girlfriend and killed Manu. There's no music score, but characters sing and listen to the radio a lot. Smitten with a woman he sees on the subway platform, Alex (Nikolaj Lie Kass) impulsively leaves his girlfriend, Simone (Maria Bonnevie) in pursuit of the stranger. Alex and Aimee (also played by Maria Bonnevie) first share a conversation in a bar, and then spend the night together in her hotel room. But there's a hitch: Aimee is married. This beautiful stranger has accompanied her husband, a renowned author (Krister Henriksson), on his book tour to Copenhagen. Suddenly, she is making plans to leave her noncommunicative husband and run away with her new lover. Meanwhile, following his night with Aimee, Alex finds his world turned upside down and inside out. He returns to his apartment to find that it doesn't exist, and neither Simone, nor his friends and family, know who he is. Is this a sign that he should pursue a life with Aimee? Or is the universe simply trying to teach Alex a lesson?
