Commissioned to create a record of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Kon Ichikawa's film is executed with the same attention to detail and sense of formal beauty characteristic of his fictional masterworks. Assisted by the great cameraman Kazuo Miyagawa (cinematographer on classic films such as Akira Kurosawa's RASHOMON, Yasujiro Ozu's UKIGUSA, and Kenji Mizoguchi's UGETSU), who supervised the 164 camera operators the project required, the director thrusts the viewer into the games in medias res rather than dwelling on the familiar narrative rhythms of victory and defeat. Ichikawa does spend some time on the heroes of the Games, such as famed Ethiopian marathoner Abebe Bikila in his attempt to repeat his gold medal performance of four years earlier, and sprinter Bob Hayes, who demonstrates why he was once known as the fastest man alive. But Ichikawa is equally drawn to the intensity, dedication, and self-discipline of the nonmedalists, for whom their sport is a way of life--a Soviet woman hammer thrower caught in freeze-frame, yacht-race crewmen hanging far over the side of a boat, and an exhausted marathon runner rushed to the hospital. Employing frequent cuts to spectator reactions, he also makes them participants in the drama of competition. While almost diametrically opposed in form and function to OLYMPIA, Leni Riefenstahl's 1938 masterpiece, this gorgeous, lynx-eyed film deserves a place alongside it in film history.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 2.35Single Side - Dual LayerAudio: Mono - JapaneseAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. In this beautiful, understated film, every character possesses a naive, heartbreaking honesty and every line communicates the sweet simplicity of basic human longing. From Danish director Lone Scherfig (ON OUR OWN), ITALIAN FOR BEGINNERS uses natural lighting, muted cinematography, and a partially improvised script--falling into the Dogme 95 genre. The film is not about learning Italian, though the film's six thirtysomething characters all meet each other through an Italian class at the community center in their quiet, rainy town. The film is about real life and hardship and hope. A nurturing hair stylist, a clumsy bakery clerk, a committed pastor, a foulmouthed waiter, a friendly hotel manager, and a lonely waitress all struggle with the banality of daily life, while dealing with their own unique challenges. But as they begin to reveal themselves and their problems to each other, they form a bond and a network that is both a safety net and a new reason to live. This film screened in September 2001 as part of the 39th New York Film Festival, organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York City.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic WidescreenInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive Menus

Guinea Pig: Mermaid in a Manhole/He Never Dies (DVD) Guinea Pig: Mermaid in a Manhole/He Never Dies (DVD) » Guinea Pig: Mermaid in a Manhole/He Never Dies (DVD)

Long heralded as one of the most repulsively violent film series ever created, Satoru Ogura's controversial, extreme GUINEA PIG films were created to push graphic horror fans to the very limit of their tolerance for gore. This DVD contains two tales. In MERMAID IN A MANHOLE, an artist who has recently lost his wife finds a diseased and dying mermaid in a sewer. He brings her home and tries to help her. Though he is only able to watch her slowly die, she encourages him to use her body in the creation of his art. Based on an actual Tokyo police case, HE NEVER DIES looks at an investigation into a case of extreme suicide, in which a man appears to have survived an extraordinarily long time into the destruction of his own body. Be warned--GUINEA PIG contains much stronger violence than the average view is accustomed to...DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull ScreenAudio: Dolby Digital Stereo - JapaneseInteractive Features: Interactive Menus Scene Selection
