Groundbreaking Japanese New Wave director Yasuko Masumura is at his finest and most original with this satirical critique of the corporate culture in postwar Japan. When the competition between 3 rival candy companies becomes cutthroat, World Caramels find a poor girl with horribly bad teeth as their new spokesperson. When she becomes an overnight star, she ends up becoming more ruthless and underhanded that even the top executives. Masumara paints a disturbing yet visually stunning world of animal instincts, backstabbing, and greed that is also laced with humor and biting wit.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 2.35Audio: Dolby Digital Mono - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Original Theatrical TrailerText/Photo Galleries: Filmographies - 1. This Man Must Die (DVD) This Man Must Die (DVD) » This Man Must Die (DVD)

Director Claude Chabrol crafts a claustrophobic and psychologically complex tale of destiny and revenge in THIS MAN MUST DIE. The film begins with a bird's-eye view of a young boy leaving a seaside beach and a speeding black Mustang approaching from the opposite direction. When the two collide in a hit-and-run accident, the movie's action is set in motion. The boy's father, Charles (Michel Duchaussoy), makes a solemn vow to find and kill the man who ended his son's life. Through a bizarre series of hunches, coincidences, and lucky guesses, Charles tracks down Helene (Carol Cellier), the sister-in-law of the man he suspects is the killer, and begins to seduce her in order to insinuate himself into her family life. When he finally comes face to face with Helene's brother-in-law, Paul (Jean Yanne), he finds himself unable to act, despite the man's monstrous behavior and callous attitude. When Charles realizes that Paul's son, Phillippe (Marc Di Napoli) wishes his father dead as well, the forces of destiny and revenge collide. Chabrol's dense and carefully crafted narrative structure explodes in an unexpected and exhilarating chain of events leading to a cathartic and disastrous climax, all portrayed through subtly evocative cinematography and terse performances. Decades later, the film inspired Sean Penn's similarly themed THE CROSSING GUARD.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1. Father (DVD) Father (DVD) » Father (DVD)

In Istvan Szabo's second feature film, the director focuses on a Hungarian boy, Tako (Dani Erdelyi), living in Budapest just after the end of World War II. His father (Miklos Gabor), a doctor and member of the partisan resistance to the Nazis, was killed just as the war ended, leaving the very impressionable boy with mixed-up memories and a curiosity about his father's life that turns into an unsettling hero worship. The story is told in a series of flashbacks--some of them factual, some inspired by the tall tales about his father that Tako tells his friends to impress them.Shot in black and white by Sandor Sara, who would do wonderful color work in Szabo's 25 FIREMAN'S STREET, the film's present-time action has a historical feel and, when combined with actual news footage in the flashbacks, forms a smooth transition between the different times. A third period is added when Tako, now played by Andras Balint, reaches adulthood at the time of the Russian invasion in 1956. He becomes involved in the radical youth movement and feels he must emulate his father's bravery. When Tako meets Anni (Katalin Solyom), a Jewish woman, the story of her parents death in Auschwitz causes him to re-examine his memories of his father. Szabo's episodic, well-staged and -acted film evocatively captures the feelings and attitudes of the first generation of Hungarians to grow up after the war.DVD Features:Region (Unknown)Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33
