Set in the Kashmir Valley between 1989 and 1999, MISSION KASHMIR tells the story of 11 year-old Altaff (Hrithik Roshan), a boy whose family is brutally murdered before him by state police who are trailing a rebel leader. Shohei Imamura's WARM WATER UNDER A RED BRIDGE stars the spirited Koji Yakusho as a Tokyo businessman whose company has recently gone bankrupt, leaving him unemployed. Estranged from his wife and with time on his hands, Yosuke (Koji) remembers a story told to him by a recently deceased friend, Taro (Kazuo Kitamura), about a hidden treasure. Not necessarily convinced that he'll find anything, Yosuke is nonetheless curious about the legend. He takes a train to a suburban fishing village and follows Taro's directions to the treasure--which, surprisingly, seem to be accurate. The only complication is a young woman, the mystifying, beautiful, and deeply bizarre Saeko (Miza Shimuzu), who lives in the house where Taro's clues lead.Imbued with magic, mystery, hope, and an overflowing sense of relief, WARM WATER UNDER A RED BRIDGE is Imamura's comic chef d'oeuvre. The plot is thoroughly funny in a soft, trying, intelligent way and the characters are well developed and wonderfully tangible. Julio (Eduardo Noriega) is at a low point, having just lost his job in a fish factory. His luck immediately seems to change when on a walk to his girlfriend's where he stumbles across a parked car whose only passenger is acorpse. Alongside the body is a priceless collection of jewels that Julio is prepared to claim as his own. He disposes of the car and the body and rents a room from at Marie's, whose proprietor (Anna Galiena) is a French woman with a mysterious reputation around town. When Marie uncovers the jewels, she also secures them for herself. Confronted by Julio, Marie uses her powers of seduction to convince Julio to store them with an old boyfriend, yet another figure who plans to steal the jewelry. Catherine Deneuve stars in this thriller as Marianne Malivert, the elegantly wasted wife of a successful jeweler.
