Mira Nair's first feature was an acclaimed drama depicting the desperate lives of homeless children in one of India's poorest cities. Krishna is a 10-year-old country boy forced to live on his own in the streets of Bombay after his family tosses him out. While he hopes to earn 500 rupees for his mother and return home, the all-consuming job of staying alive quickly makes that dream an unreality. He develops the street-smarts needed to survive in the seedy world of prostitutes, drug addicts, thieves, and other homeless children, but the harrowing experience takes an extremely heavy emotional toll on him. The recipient of international acclaim, Vittorio de Sica's Italian Neorealist masterwork, THE BICYCLE THIEF, is a treasure of world cinema. After nearly two years of unemployment, Antonio (Lamberto Maggiorani) finally finds work posting bills. But he needs a bicycle to do the job. Unfortunately, he was forced to pawn his own bicycle long ago. In a humbling, tragic scene, Antonio exchanges his family's linen for his bicycle. But when the bike is stolen on his first day of work, he must comb the streets of Rome in search of the bike: his family's only means to survival. After three days of hunting, Antonio and his son, Bruno (Enzo Staiola), find the thief (Vittorio Antonucci)--but without witnesses or evidence, the police are unwilling to help Antonio. Hopeless, Antonio and Bruno wander aimlessly through Rome, landing outside of a soccer stadium where hundreds of bicycles are parked.
His will broken, Antonio attempts to steal a bike but is caught in the act.Thematically, Vittoria de Sica's THE BICYCLE THIEF details an everyman story of loss of innocence in the face of a destitute society, while the film's poignant acting and directing creates an individual and heart-wrenching tale of one man's struggle to feed his family. The crumbling squalor of former USSR city Tibilisi, Georgia, is the setting for a tale of three generations of Soviet women. Elder matriarch Eka (Esther Gorintin) lives for the letters from her beloved son Otar, who fled to Paris years ago as an illegal immigrant. Her daughter Marina (Nino Khomassourioze) strains under the pressures of their miserable existence in the now

country where the electricity and water work only sporadically and the buildings seem as depressed as the people. She loves her mother, though, and when news arrives of Otar`s sudden death she asks her own daughter (Dinara Drukarova) to keep writing the letters so as not to break Eka`s heart. The plot thickens when Eka decides to spend their life savings on three tickets to Paris so they can track down her beloved Otar.Director Julie Bertucelli previously worked as an assistant director to Krzystof Kieslowski (RED, WHITE, and BLUE trilogy) and she has inherited his genius for lighting, composition, and ability to find beauty in the most squalid domestic settings. The excellent cast conveys much with minimal dialogue, making this register far more deeply than as a mere allegory of a country coming to terms with its past lies and failures. It won the 2003 Critic`s Week Grand Prize at Cannes.
