Flemish filmmaker Felix Van Groeningen's debut feature STEVE + SKY, a gritty romantic drama about a struggling petty criminal and his shockingly beautiful stripper lover, takes place amidst a backdrop of crime and shady goings-on in the red light district of Ghent. Recently released from a prison stint for a drug violation, scrawny Steve (Titus De Voogdt) looks up his cell-mate Jean-Claude (Johan Heldenbergh) and immediately joins him in a motorcycle-stealing racket and the reopening of his exotic dance club. Along the way, he meets the gorgeous Sky (Van Groeningen's girlfriend and fashion model Delfine Bafort), a wounded soul looking for her place in the world. As their unlikely romance develops and Sky grows dependent on Steve's affections, he rejects her love and his alienation places a nearly fatal strain on Sky's fragile psyche.Influenced by films like PULP FICTION and ALL THE REAL GIRLS, Van Groeningen has created a whirlwind of a story, with a constantly thumping soundtrack by Belgian DJs Soulwax (aka 2 Many DJs) setting off the action. In Flemish Dutch language, STEVE + SKY is the first feature film to use the Ghent dialect of the language rather than the usual Antwerp dialect. Additionally, there is a brief cameo as a bouncer from former Belgian boxer Jean-Pierre Coopman, famous for a 1976 fight with Muhammad Ali. An admirable mix of action and intense character drama, STEVE + SKY is a fast-paced and touching drama about real people trying to fulfill their hopes and dreams as they dodge both the law and social conformity.

SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE was originally conceived as a six-part TV mini-series. Since the film features only two principal actors, a limited number of indoor locales, and no musical score (nor any other atmosphere-enhancing devices), the success of this intense drama stems largely from the interaction between leads Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson, who play Marianne and Josef, an upper-middle-class married couple. At first glance, their lives appear to be devoid of marital conflict, but soon after the opening sequence, it becomes clear that tension is mounting just below the surface. The movie consists almost entirely of dramatic exchanges between Marianne and Josef and eventually evolves into an agonizing account of the deterioration of their marriage. But throughout it all, a deep, underlying love keeps the couple from breaking off all ties--in spite of the mutual aggression, cruelty, and even violence that forms part of their relationship.Ingmar Bergman anticipated that SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE would baffle, if not antagonize, viewers who had come to expect more stylistically groundbreaking and aesthetically polished work from him. Director Alex de la Iglesia has become well-known in his native Spain for his genre pastiches and parodies, quirky characters similar to those from the Coen brothers, and a bizarre, black-as-pitch humor reminiscent of the early films of Peter Jackson. In his film COMMONWEALTH (LA COMUNIDAD), veteran actress Carmen Maura (best known for WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN) plays a real estate agent who discovers a fortune in the apartment of a dead man. Unfortunately, a group of neighbors have been waiting for the man to die so that they can seize the money for themselves. Young Assol lives with her ex-sailor father, Longren, in a reclusive home on the outskirts of a remote Russian fishing village; there they are outcasts, spurned and taunted by the other townsfolk, and the butt of children's jokes. But Assol was issued a prophecy by a wizard as a very young child, which has helped her bear her hardships with valor and courage; he told her that someday a brave sailor would arrive to take her to a faraway land under crimson sails, and she has grown up waiting patiently for the prophecy to come true. A young man who has grown up in the village appreciates the beauty of the romantic and dreamy Assol;
