Water Drops on Burning Rocks (DVD)
Set in 1970s Germany, Leopold [Bernard Giraudeau], a 50-year-old businessman, seduces 20-year-old Franz [Malik Zidi]. They fall deeply in love and move in together. The rest of the movie focuses on the emotional turmoil that both endure as they grow apart, bickering over things of little importance. A twist halfway through the story adds a chaotic comic element, as Franz and Leopold are joined by their ex-girlfriends. WATER DROPS ON BURNING ROCKS was adapted by writer/director Francois Ozon from a play called Tropfen Auf Heisse Steine that was written by Rainer Werner Fassbinder when he was 19 years old, but was never before produced.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseLetterboxedAudio: Stereo - English Subtitled - English - OptionalAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1. In February 2005, the longest civil or criminal case in English legal history finally came to a close. The case saw two political activists, Helen Steel and Dave Morris, on trial for leaflets they had distributed in the 1980s, which made several claims against the McDonalds fast food corporation. Among the angry protestations they flung at McDonalds were accusations of low wages for staff and poor treatment towards the animals used by the business. As McDonalds prepared a legal assault on the couple that is estimated to have cost $19 million, the penniless Steel and Morris endlessly poured over legal papers and law books, and decided to represent themselves in court. After 313 days spent tirelessly fighting their corner and ceaselessly pointing out the archaic nature of Britain`s libel laws, a verdict was reached. Fortunately director Franny Armstrong caught 10 years worth of the
McLibel
trial on film, and has edited it into an absorbing documentary on the case. Acclaimed filmmaker Ken Loach has also contributed by directing some reconstructions of the key courtroom battles. Armstrong`s film manages to capture all the highs and lows felt by Steel and Morris as they refuse to let go of their principals while facing a deluge of intimidating maneuvers from the McDonalds team. But MCLIBEL also demonstrates how large corporations can be humbled, and as the case winds to its surprising conclusion, Armstrong perfectly captures the mood of both teams as legal history is made.

Miguel Pinero was a New York City poet and playwright who wrote what he knew: a world of stabbing, shooting and dying. This gritty, non-linear biographical film presents Pinero's dark charisma and even darker life in all it's angry glory. A junkie, a drug dealer, and a thief, Pinero (played by Benjamin Bratt) spent time in SIng-SIng prison, an experience which was the basis of his most famous play, SHORT EYES, which won the Tony award in 1974. Pinero also pioneered the spoken-word poetry (the forebearer to rap and hip-hop) of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, which he helped found.Mixing digital video in color with 16mm film in black and white, the film creates a convincingly harsh and lively portrait of life on the mean streets of Lower East Side Manhattan in the 1970s and'80s. There were a number of people in Pinero's life who recognized his genius and tried to save him from self-destruction: his mother (Rita Moreno), theater impresario Joseph Papp (Mandy Patinkin), and his longtime girlfriend (Talisa Soto). But the allure of crime and drugs won him over, and Pinero finally crashed and burned, dying young in 1988. This film is a passionate tribute to a passionate artist who remains an important Puerto Rican-American icon.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.85:1Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Documentary - 1.A Look at Miguel Pinero The Man TrailersInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive Menus
