This smart, sexy thriller, the debut feature from director Andres Waissbluth's, was a hit in its native Chile and was well received on the festival circuit. Adopting the theme of the young country boy's loss of innocence in the urban underworld, it's structure is intriguingly presented and paced, divided into three sections told from three different perspectives. Two brothers from the south move to Santiago after their mother dies, and older sibling Silvio takes the 17-year-old Victor to a strip club to celebrate his birthday. The brothers are quickly caught up in an underground life of crime when the club owner, gangster Don Pascual, asks Silvio to work for him. Silvio complies and quickly rises within the ranks, but Pascual's mistress, the femme fatale and stripper Graciela, holdholds a power over all three men that is fraught with inchoate disaster. Based on the 1971 Stanford University simulation study of the psychology of imprisonment (otherwise know as the Stanford Prison Experiment), DAS EXPERIMENT is an intense psychodrama about a group of ordinary men who volunteer to take place in a paid two-week study on the mental effects of prison life. Following a series of intellectual and physical examinations, the men are separated into two groups--eight guards and twelve prisoners--and locked into a working prison, fully loaded with cameras to capture their every move. One of the prisoners, an undercover reporter named Tarek (Moritz Leibtrau of RUN LOLA RUN), uses every opportunity to provoke the guards and collect quotes for his story, but he consistently pushes the envelope too far. As egos are bruised and machismo is belittled, the guards resort to sadistic torture techniques while the prisoners formulate an escape scheme that is laden with vengeance. The experiment inevitably goes awry (even the moderators have utterly lost control) leading to a powerful climatic battle between good and evil.Director Oliver Hirschbiegel keeps the film moving at a fast clip, effortlessly switching from the film to the prison cameras and even to a pair of 007-esque spy glasses worn by Tarek to reveal different angles of observation and offer the viewer a voyeuristic experience. Harumi Inoue stars in Japanese director Takashi Ishii's bloody revenge thriller as Chihiro, a young woman who is trying to make a new life for herself in Tokyo. She has an office job and a fiance (Nogami, played by Shunsuke Matsuoka), but her life changes when the past she is running away from refuses to let her go. Five years earlier, she was raped by a trio of men who videotaped their cruelty. Too afraid to report the incident, Chihiro instead left her town for the big city. But the three men have found her, returning to continue where they'd left off. When Nogami finds out about the rape, he walks out on Chihiro, leaving her to fend for herself. What follows is both brutal and mesmerizing, gory and unforgettable.One of the underlying themes in Ishii's psychological thriller is water. The film opens with a shot of snow falling over a shivering young woman. All the characters are constantly showering. While Chihiro battles her first attacker, she strikes him with a water bottle, and in later fights thunderstorms can be heard outside. And then, of course, there is Chihiro's creative use of freezers in her apartment. Gay culture receives short shrift in the close-minded Indian community, as illustrated by director Mahesh Dattani's MANGO SOUFFLE. Kamlesh (Ankur Vikal) is a gay fashion designer who still bears the mental scars of a recently terminated relationship. As part of the grieving process he invites a mixture of gay and straight friends over to dinner, where he decides to make a special announcement. But as the party swings into gear, surprises are in store for almost all the attendees, with a number of guests deciding to shed their inhibitions once and for all by revealing things about themselves that no one was previously privy to.
