Master of suspense Claude Chabrol takes aim at both terrorists and the establishment in his chilling film, NADA. A left wing gang of motley anarchists called Nada kidnap the American ambassador to Paris from an exclusive Parisian brothel. The overall confusion, violence, and mayhem following this act makes both the terrorists and the police force look like bumbling, confused, destructive idiots. Chabrol's trademark cold stare at the typical bourgeois family is this time aimed at the Nada gang as they hide out in their country farmhouse and wait for a response to their ransom demands for the ambassador. As the group begins to form their own kind of dysfunctional anarchist family unit, it becomes obvious that the French authorities are less concerned about the safe return of the ambassador than with the capture of the terrorists. The police stop at nothing to get to the gang, ferreting out friends and relatives, and eventually finding the location of the gang's hideout. The brutal conclusion brings a hectic and bloody showdown between the Nada gang and the French police, one in which both the political extremism of the gang and the amoral machinations of the police are rendered cartoonish and absurd. Carrying on the tradition of J-horror thrillers that have taken the Western world by storm, PREMONITION is a creepy descent into the realms of the supernatural, assuming an unnerving, non-linear form, and taking numerous unexpected turns along the way. Hideki Satomi is a professor whose world is turned upside down when he reads an obituary foretelling his daughter's death in a car crash, which in fact comes to pass later that same day. Three years later Hideki is still devastated by this tragedy, which has estranged from his wife, Ayaka, who is convinced her husband is crazy; she believes he hallucinated the obituary, which later came to obsess him. Eventually, however, the two switch roles, as Ayaka herself comes to be haunted by the future-predicting newspaper, and a series of unexplained killings all over Japan draws the couple ever-deeper into the mystery. Although PREMONITION satisfies the expectations audiences have come to hold with regards to Japanese horror, it avoids redundancy and the ubiquitous imagery found in such films, making it a unique and engrossing entry in this ever-exciting genre.

With THE EEL, director Shohei Imamura shows that eels are not just a tasty sushi treat but also a symbol of the human condition. Yamashita (Koji Yakusho) kills his unfaithful wife and turns himself in to the police. Eight years later he is paroled and must try to find redemption. Setting up shop as a barber, he encounters several unusual characters, including a young man who hopes to attract UFOs and a woman with a troubled past who tries to reel him in with delicious lunch boxes. Yamashita, however, is obsessed with his pet eel, his only companion during his years in prison. In his previous films (THE INSECT WOMAN, BALLAD OF NARAYAMA), Imamura has often suggested the closeness between humans and animals; in THE EEL, he takes the connection one step further, having his main character carry on hilarious dialogues with his pet. Based on the novel YAMI NI HIRAMEKU by Akira Yoshimura, the film marks Imamura`s triumphant return to filmmaking after an eight-year break. When the film won the Palme d`Or at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, Imamura became one of only three directors to have won the honor twice.
