After an innocent man is killed with no remorse, a mute gunslinger named Silence (Jean-Louis Trintignant) is called upon by the man's wife to seek revenge. Standing between the innocents and the corrupted bounty hunters, Silence decides to mete out his own brand of justice, even though the lines between the bad and the good have already been blurred. Save the Green Planet (DVD) Save the Green Planet (DVD) » Save the Green Planet (DVD)

This is a jaw-droppingly bizarre movie from Korea that mixes scenes of gruesome torture and violence with comedy and heartbreaking profundity. Perhaps as a result of too many amphetamines and violent incidents in his past, beekeeper Lee Byeong Gu (Sin Ha-Gyun) has become convinced that an unscrupulous business tycoon (Kan Man-Shik) is actually an alien from the planet Andromeda. Lee's frumpy acrobat girlfriend (Hwang Jung-Min) helps him abduct the alien and torture him into confessing. Meanwhile, a hangdog detective is following a trail leading to Lee's hideout high in the mountains.Let the timid be warned: this is not the antipollution comedy that the title might indicate. Man's inhumanity to man is certainly depicted--as in events like Korea's 1980 Kwangju riots--but there's more going on here than any one summation could describe: bees attack, a pet dog named Earth dines on human remains, alternate theories of evolution are posited (i.e. Noah's Ark was a deep submarine carrying DNA samples); an entire lifetime of films, political turmoil, anime and manga are boiled down and distilled into one profound, multi-textual allegory. Adventurous viewers will be in for one hell of a ride, as this film dares go where few have gone before, yet it does so with heart and intellect to match its wicked humor and headlong momentum.

Red (DVD) Red (DVD) » Red (DVD)

The final installment of Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski's brilliant THREE COLORS trilogy, RED stands for Fraternity (of Liberty and Equality) in the French flag and national motto. Valentine Dussaut (the angelic Irene Jacob), a young student and model, accidentally hits a dog with her car. She attends to its injuries, only to discover that the animal's bitter owner, Judge Joseph Kern (Jean-Louis Trintignant), doesn't care for it--or anything--anymore. Valentine adopts the dog, but it runs away, straight back to the judge's home. When she returns to fetch the animal, she is shocked to find the judge eavesdropping on his neighbors' telephone conversations. Although initially morally disgusted, Valentine finds herself mesmerized by him; his sorrow and isolation intrigue her, and mirror her own feelings of sadness. Soon their relationship evolves into a platonic, yet passionate love that frees the judge from his guilt and cynicism, and opens a future of happiness for Valentine. Kieslowski's last film as a director is a bona fide work of art--aesthetically pleasing, philosophically challenging, and supremely engaging. As in the other films of the trilogy where he makes intentional use of the colors of the titles BLUE and WHITE within the films, here he employs the color red, on several levels, to further explore and illuminate the themes of this particular story. Although the director's early death was a tragic loss for the film world, his THREE COLORS trilogy will stand forever as one of cinema's most profound achievements.

Saudade do futuro (DVD) Saudade do futuro (DVD) » Saudade do futuro (DVD)

Cesar Paes's award-winning documentary, SAUDADE DO FUTURO, tells the story of the poor Nordestinos who travel south to try to find fame and fortune--or at least a better life--in the vibrant town of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Instead of making a more conventional documentary with voice-over narration, Paes, with his wife, Marie-Clemence, serving as executive producer, lets the people and the music speak for themselves. However, the performers are aware of the film, so some of the songs are written specifically for it, with one song even mentioning the title of the movie in the lyrics. The film focuses on how the music of these troubadors examines their everyday life, from family relationships and religion to finances and prejudice. The rhythm of the city, featuring the unique sounds of forro and repentismo, is even evident in the Brazilian stock market. Among the standout musicians are Sonhador et Peneira, who bang their tambourines as they exchange raplike stanzas, one trying to top the other by being faster and more creative; Ze Honorio, the well-respected accordionist; and the Banda de Pifanos, who are now in their third generation of detailing how hard life is in modern-day Sao Paulo.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseWidescreen - 1.85Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - PortugueseAdditional Release Material: Extra Scenes Recording Sessions Trailers - 1. The Ten Commandments (DVD) » The Ten Commandments (DVD)

This spectacular biblical epic from legendary showman Cecil B. DeMille tells the story of Moses from his infancy to the triumphant moment when he led the Israelites out of captivity in Egypt. The film begins as the pharaoh's daughter (Yvonne De Carlo) discovers the abandoned infant Moses and takes him to the shelter of her family. Charlton Heston stars as the young man raised by the pharaoh as an Egyptian prince. Moses is righteous and kind, the favored successor to the kingdom, which results in the deep-seated jealousy of Prince Rameses (Yul Brynner). Rameses and Moses compete for the throne and the love of the young princess, Nefretiri (Anne Baxter), until Moses learns the truth about his origins and joins the Jewish slaves in their fight for freedom. After receiving the Ten Commandments from God, Moses helps free the Jews from the pharaoh's tyrannical rule, surmounting all obstacles in his way--including the parting of the Red Sea, in one of the movie's most famous scenes. Cecil B. DeMille's extravagant final film--and remake of his silent 1923 version--is a legendary combination of the master showman's love of historical realism, spectacle, lavish scenic design, and dizzying crowd sequences. The exodus alone is a stunning feat of modern cinema, featuring thousands of actors trekking through the arid desert as Pharaoh's chariots chase after them.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - English Dolby Digital 2.0 - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1.
