SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT is an enchanting comedy of manners with a satirical edge. A powerfully moving and emotional film that is as rough around the edges as it is sweet at its core, MADAME SATA tells the life story of Jaoa Francisco dos Santos (Lazaro Ramos), an historic figure in Brazilian counterculture. Known to his followers and friends as Madame Sata, which is his stage name in the haunting narrative performances he gives dressed in drag, Joao is paterfamilias to a bizarre group of street urchins that reside in his apartment as his surrogate family. Set in 1932 in the rowdy ghetto of Rio de Janeiro called Lapa, the film presents Jaoa as a near-mythic persona who is in turns a hustler, a criminal, a street fighter, a murderer, and above all, a hero. Sometimes dizzying in both its photography and its subject matter, and fascinating all the way through, MADAME SATA leaves viewers feeling confused, enchanted, and a bit forlorn. Its treatment of race and class issues is harsh and disturbing, but Jaoa's dreams of performing at the Blue Danube nightclub and providing a better life for his friends are ultimately enlightening. A movie from Tajikistan director Jamshed Usmonov, ANGEL ON THE RIGHT follows the fortunes of Hamro (Maruf Pulodzoda) as he returns to his native country after 10 years spent living in Moscow. Having languished in a Russian jail for most of the time, the former criminal hopes to return to Tajikistan to help his ailing mother who is close to death. Unfortunately he receives a rather rude awakening when he discovers that the criminal underclass lurking in his home town hasn't forgotten about the sizeable debts Hamro owes them, so he attempts to sell his mother's house before landing in more hot water. He also discovers that he has a 10-year-old son, tries to woo his mother's nurse, and avoids the local Mafiosos at all costs. Usmonov steers his cast through some darkly comic material as the plot unfolds, with the movie providing an invaluable object lesson in how not to live your life, as well as plenty of laughs along the way.
