With the Japanese currently leading the way in thought-provoking cinematic violence, it's only fitting that Kinji Fukasaku's Battle Royale is being touted as a <I>Clockwork Orange for the 21st century. Based on the novel by Koshun Takami, the film opens with a series of fleeting images of unruly Japanese schoolchildren, whose bad behavior provides a justification for the "punishments" that will ensue. Once the prequel has been dispensed with, the classmates are drugged and awaken on an island where they find they have been fitted with dog collars that monitor their every move. Instructed by their old teacher ("Beat" Takeshi) with the aid of an upbeat MTV-style video, they are told of their fate: after an impartial lottery they have been chosen to fight each other in a three-day, no-rules contest, the "Battle Royale." Their only chance of survival is through the death of all their classmates.

Some pupils embrace their mission with zeal, while others simply give up or try to become peacemakers and revolutionaries. However, the ultimate drive for survival comes from the desire to protect the one you love. Battle Royale works on many different levels, highlighting the authorities' desperation to enforce law and order and the alienation caused by the generation gap. After 5 years of experimentation, MARIE & JACK was the first commercial film in our "Real People, Real LIfe, Real Sex" series.<br><br> Shot in the Summer of 2001, Marie Silva and Jack Bravo were a married couple working in the adult industry, looking for a change from the all too predictable and formulaic approach to on-screen sexuality they experienced in their "day job". I was an idealistic young documentary filmmaker exploring what love and sex might look like outside the confines of the downbeat Art House approach.<br><br> I wanted to show what love and sex looked like on screen when the people making love to each other were actually in love with each other, and I wanted to do it in a way that both honored the language of cinema and respected my audience as compassionate human beings. I hoped the result would be a film that would excite the mind, open the heart and arouse the body; and Marie and Jack were generous enough to lay their relationship open both physically and emotionally to my cameras, and through that, to the world.<br><br> The result was MARIE AND JACK: A HARDCORE LOVE STORY, a documentary film that is both gentle and unflinching in its depiction of sexuality and eroticism inside of marriage. In their interview Marie and Jack are utterly candid, discussing their love for each other, both emotional and physical. I made this film because I wanted prove that the human experience of sexuality was every bit as worthy of being witnessed as the violence and misery that is so readily accepted in entertainment, and that being 'serious' about sexuality didn't have to mean draining all the passion and eroticism out of sex. I think that what we captured in MARIE & JACK is every bit as joyful, lusty, and loving as what happens in our own bedrooms, and I hope that when you see this film you'll agree. <p>We filmed the Real People, Real Life, Real Sex erotic documentary DAMON & HUNTER: DOING IT TOGETHER in early 2006, as a follow up to our bestselling films MARIE & JACK: A HARDCORE LOVE STORY, and XANA & DAX: WHEN OPPOSITES ATTRACT. Peggy and I always knew that we wanted the series to feature love stories from a diverse selection of people, and after talking to Damon and Hunter in a series of pre-interviews over the course of several months, they seemed as intrigued by the idea of doing something "kind of anthropological" (as Hunter jokingly called it) as we were interested in capturing their story on film. As in the rest of our <i>Real People, Real Life, Real Sex series of erotic documentaries, the first half of the film is an interview with Damon and Hunter: how they met, how they fell in love, and what they love about being in love. The second half of the film is a candid love scene, every bit as warm and intimate as the interview.

Damon and Hunter had been in a relationship for just over two years when we shot them. Both had some experience in the adult film industry, but they had never had the opportunity to just be themselves: to talk about their initial hesitation in moving their relationship from friends to committed lovers, to discuss frankly what they like about sex with one another, and what makes it special and different. Most importantly, they were free here to make love for the camera they way they wanted to, directed only by what they themselves wanted to have captured on film. They do use condoms normally, and the way it's incorporated into their lovemaking is both erotic and anticipation-building -- a terrific example of just how hot and connected safer sex can be.
